Default Shoulder pain and NROLFW

I'm 48, 5'2" and 102#. I just finished NROLFW Stage 1. This is my first heavy weightlifting program.

1. When did the pain begin?
I had already noticed a weakness before I began NROLFW in late March.
2. What were you doing at the time? Or did the pain come on gradually over time?
Gradual over time. I had to stop using 3# weights and/or a resistance band during cardio dvds that I do that involve a lot of arm movements.
3. Where, anatomically, is the pain?
OK, I looked at the getbodysmart site and it only confused me more in describing the location of my pain. It's in the front left upper arm just below my shoulder joint. It's kind of a vertical pain running up and down mostly by my shoulder but sometimes down toward my elbow. I can try to get a pic if that will help.
4. What does the pain feel like? Sharp? Dull? Aching? Stabbing? Shooting?
It's usually just a weakness really with some pain associated if I keep doing the movements that aggravate it. It's a dull ache that turns to sharp with overdoing.
5. Is the pain constant, or intermittent, or only on certain motions?
Intermittent after certain motions. It always goes away. Sometimes it feels a bit off when I wake up in the morning but that goes away.
6. What motions make your pain worse?
It hurts if I raise my arm up either straight overhead or out to a V and then pull it down. With overhead dumbbell press, I cannot do more than 10# with left arm. Pushups are OK if I keep my elbows right next to my sides and then I have to concentrate on not favoring my right arm. If I stretch my arm out to the left and bend my elbow toward the front bringing my fist to my shoulder it hurts if my palm is facing toward my shoulder. If my palm is facing down toward the floor, it's OK. Stretching my arm straight out to the side and then bending my elbow up so my fist goes up in an arc toward my shoulder hurts. Reaching over in a 45 degree angle toward my right side causes the most discomfort. I've been doing all the NROLFW Stage 1 exercises with little problem except for the overhead press which I had to restrict to 10# and sometimes pushups had to be 45 degree rather than 30 degree. I could do deadlifts, squats, lat pulldowns, everything else without an issue.
7. What, if anything, makes your pain better?
Restricting range of motion from those few things that bother it and it feels totally normal.
8. Does your pain radiate to any other part of your body?
No. Just from my left shoulder down toward my left elbow along the front of the arm.
9. What things could you do before, that you cannot do now because of your injury?
I was doing Walk Away the Pounds dvds for cardio and they have some arm raises and pull downs that I can't do full range any more.
10. What is your main concern regarding the pain and its consequences?
I want to keep on with NROLFW to the bext of my ability. I don't want to injure myself.
11. Have you ever injured that part of your body before? If so, how?
No.
12. Is your pain getting worse over time? And if so, how much worse over what time period?
No.

I live in Greenville, SC and am willing to see a specialist if you can recommend someone. I just didn't want to go to my family doc and him say, "Well, duh, what are you doing lifting weights? Just stop the weightlifting..."

Thank you for any thoughts or recommendations. I am scheduled to start NROLFW Stage 2 on Tuesday and I'd really like to continue if I can...

Pauline, it sounds like your biceps tendon ... could be tendonitis, but most likely a result of impingement. Basically, lay off any pressing movements; and add in some good lower trap activation movements. You should also stretch your pecs and biceps, watch your posture, and ice it if it is sore.

Try a search on here for biceps impingement ... I seem to recall a few threads. If you need more info, please let me know ...
