Medically cleared to resume activities.
OK Injury forumites. I need you help. I've just been medically cleared to resume working out and physical activity after having major abdominal surgery. I was cut tip to tip. Unfortunately, this is the second time I've been through this. The first time I over did it a little and tore some stuff.
I wanted to run this thought by everyone and see if it passed the sanity test. I was planning on swimming for 2 - 4 weeks to get a low impact full body work out including the core which as you can imagine is very weak.
Once I break myself back in I'll start a more traditional lifting program.
Thought? I'm open to all sorts of suggestions.

I think that sounds like a pretty sound plan, especially if you enjoy swimming. Great way to regain your mobility and some strength. No need to get in a rush. Sounds like your body went through hell!

I don't particularly enjoy swimming yet but it's something I haven't done. Better still I thought it would be good for me.

It's certainly a workout, and it won't overload your joints.
I'm with you though... swimming laps is boring to me, like running on a treadmill. I only like it when I'm doing it for fun, like playing with the kids or diving off a board.

Good news Gabe!
I think swimming would be an excellent start back into things. Post-op you just want to remember that the tissue remodeling (ie healing) is not finished for 6 or so months, so you want to gradually build up the stress on the surgically repaired tissue. I would probably start indirectly with ab work when you are ready. In other words, instead of planks or something like that, I would focus more on other compound movements which will activate the core, but not overly stress it until the tissue is better prepared.

Yes it does. That advise may have saved me. I was thinking that I might need to do some direct ab work to build up the core before moving on the other stuff.
Another point. The ostomy cut directly through the muscle while the other scar was between the muscles.

Muscle heals very fast ... the connective tissue takes longer ... you'll know when you're ready ... try a few weeks of indirect stuff, then add in some more direct like pushups or chins ... and gradually work toward planks. They are needed, but you want to gradually stress the tissue IMO.
