I have that same problem, but with sprinting and walking. I used to be a duck walker, but forced myself to start walking with my feet straight ahead. A problem I have noticed seeing myself walk in the mirror at the gym is my knee and foot togther turning out everytime I lift my foot off the ground, but then straight ahead when the foot hits the ground. but with sprinting, my feet are external rotated the whole time.

so I have tight external rotators that need to be stretched and weak inner thighs that needs activation/strengthening. I know I have flexible internal rotators because I can touch my forehead with my toes (if that muscle is called the internal rotators...correct me if I'm wrong. I cant bring my knee to my forehead (not even close due to the piriformis muscle)).

will this help me too so that I can actually sprint on the balls of my feet instead of the side balls of feet or side of foot? I can sprint real fast this way, but I would be faster and less chance of injuring my ankles if I sprint with my toes straight ahead.

whats a good exercise for the inner thighs other than adductor machines, which probably wont help? I know of inner thigh squeeze or squeezes with a pilates/yoga ball between the legs or ring that I can start doing. When I have taken pilates before, I had major trouble with the inner thigh activation and thats why I could not do a sit up without my feet coming off the ground (what the teacher said) when I took the class once a while ago. to keep the legs on the ground, inner thighs have to work to do that. am I correct? I am trying to remember what the teacher said.

Mrs. Darcy ... that's one of my favorite books BTW!

I'm not exactly sure why your structure is such, but it sounds like you have a tibial torsion. I could tell you if you take some photos in shorts (so I can see your knees) from the waist down, barefoot. Front, rear, and both side views.

Go UConn!!
I'm originally from South Windsor, but live in Canton now.
The shoreline is beautiful ... Old Lyme particularly.
I graduated from UConn in 1990 and again in 1995. It's not the same place though ... have you been back? My husband (1988 alum ... and South Campus resident - Stowe A) was horrified that they tore down the old South Campus dorms! I'd like to see if the Jungle is still overrun with cockroaches ... At least the bricks are no longer falling off the library ...

My ex-husband lived in the Jungle. I stopped by a few times in the late 90s. I'm not sure if the library was done yet ... so did you get to work with the basketball team? Ray Allen seems like the nicest person on earth, for an athlete anyway ... well, maybe besides Derek Jeter.

Do you follow figure skating at all? What do you think of the rash of hip injuries to all these young girls (and a little older if you count my favorite Michelle Kwan)?

I will take pictures, but I don't have my USB cable. It'll be quite embarrassing because my legs are honky white, especially for living in the South for eight years. Plus, I'm not exactly ... uh ... fit. My "Mii" on Wii Fit is quite round.

I can tell you that this issue has led to year of frustration riding. I've had coaches take my leg pull it out from the saddle to correct it. (In an abduction motion) My hip feels like it's popped out of joint. Extremely painful. I'm sure my hip is still where it's supposed to be, BUT something goes where it's not supposed to. I usually have to jump off the horse to shake it back. I've found some ways to compensate but they are not ultimately not "good riding."

I think I have a very limited range of motion in abduction because I've tried it off the horse and the same thing happens. Ahem, it's happened in the OB's office, too ...

Have you ever tried any suspension work? You can buy the TRX product or the jungle gym, you can go to the rock climbing outlet and buy some webbing, you can go out back to the barn and get some rope, or borrow fluffys leash. I have used all of the above (the name of the dog has been changed to protect his identity).

Once you have the above, you need to find something above your head to serve as the anchor point. High bar, monkey bar, tree, rafter ... you get the idea.

Whatever exercises you try to do suspended with your body weight ABOVE your contact point with the strap / rope - pushups, dips, lunges, etc. is VERY difficult. Until you develop all the stabilizer muscles, you will look as if you are having a spasm. In time, you will be able to control your limbs and do the aforementioned exercises as if you were firmly attached to terra firma.

For the inner thighs, have the straps / ropes attached to something just more than shoulder width apart, adjust the loops to just above ground level, hold on to the straps as if your life depended on it while you step into the loops. Progress from just standing in the loops, to gently moving your feet, to doing the splits - a little at first, then wider each session, but...listen up....be careful. If you split further than you have the ability to control, you will keep going until your ass hits the grass.

Racing dirt bikes, I kept having groin problems as a result of putting my inside leg out to turn, getting my foot caught on ruts, tires, competitors, whatever and getting my foot dragged back. I started doing the splits standing in straps and it has helped immensely. For me, initially, I would do about 20 splits and have trouble walking for 2 days - no pain, just that therapeutic muscle pain. Best of luck.

I worked with the basketball team back in the late 1980s ... Cliff Robinson, Phil Gamble, John Gwynn, Tate George ... those guys. Pre-Dream Season mostly.

How's your overall flexibility?
What do you do for stretching?
Do you do any foam rolling?

My general flexibility isn't so bad. It's not what I had a when I did gymnastics as a kid, but I can touch the ground flatfooted. I can almost put put stomach on my thighs while sitting in the pike position (with toes pointed). Flexing my feet makes things a bit more difficult. I probably could do a very bad backbend if my wrists would hold up, but i ruined them doing gymnastics.

I'm 5'4" and weigh 175 lbs, which is sounds obese, but I still have a waist and wear a 14/XL, sometimes a 16. I can still do a decent cartwheel if it weren't for my wrists and headrushes!

I'll try to take a picture tomorrow!

I am very bad about exercising. I find it so boring and miserable. I know there's no secret about losing weight. Of course it would be great if I could weigh 135, but that's not a weight I've ever been able to maintain. If I could lose 20 lbs. - a solid size 12 for me - I'd be psyched. I could probably maintain it. I just can't seem to find the motivation.

I was at UCONN from Jan 1989 - Spring 1994, so I was there when most of those basketball players were there. Well, I was at the Avery Point branch 'til spring '91, then went up to the main campus in Sept. 91. Donny and Donyell Marshall were the big ones, then Ray my last year, I think. Travis Knight was there ... the Israeli guy (not the '80s one).

How's your hip flexibility?

Can you do a pigeon stretch?
