Default Squats and DL causing knee pain, any alternatives or warmups ???

Hello everyone, thanx for stopping by and reading this. As the title says, my wife recently started using weights in her workouts and found out that doing DL's or squats and lunges causes her right knee and ankle to hurt. The knee feels fine during the workouts, its only after that she feels the pain. I don't think that its injury related simply because she's a long time runner and does all sorts of crazy aerobics like kickboxing and spinning and has never had any problems, only after she started lifting. Are there any exercises that she can do to replace DL and squats for now that could maybe help her strenghthen her knees, and some stretches to help her warmup ???
Any and all comments are greatly appreciated. Thanx

It's probably her glutes that need strengthening ... and I would have someone check her DL and squat form (post a video here if she does not have access to a qualified professional).

What workout is she following?

Where is her knee pain? What provokes it? What relieves it? (see sticky at the top of this subforum for other important questions to answer)
