Default Injury on spine in middle back

For the past week or so I've had a pretty nasty pain in my middle back. It's bothered by that section of my back bending in any direction too far. It's very bothered by doing lat pulldowns and stretching my arms forward as if you were holding onto a doorknob with both hands and pulling back. Doing pullups was quite nasty as well.

In the past day or so it's gotten considerably more painful. Right now, touching it right on my spine is painful.

The location is maybe two or three inches down my spine from the line between the bottom of my shoulder blades. The pain is sharp and fairly intense with a very dull sensation just in general.

Any idea what this is and how to fix it? I've been icing it pretty regularly for the past day since it's gotten worse. I'd really like to get back to working out.

Could be a facet lock in your thoracic spine or could be a strain of your latissimus dorsi.

Do you have a foam roller?

I don't have a foam roller. What's it for?

How could I distinguish between it being a strain or a facet lock? If it were a facet lock, how could I unlock it?

The foam roller is good for both ... you could try two tennis balls taped together although I find that a bit more intense.

I'm short on time right now, but do a search on here (injury forum and training forum) for foam roll stuff ... you should find links to some exercises.

Also if you head over to T-Nation you can look for Mike Robertson and Eric Cressey's articles on "Neanderthal No More". That should give you some ideas.

Ditto the foam roller! Can't even tell you how helpful it is (for me) in this particular area.

hopefully just a strain vs. a facet locking issue in this area of the spine.

Just to follow up, I went to an orthopedist to get checked out and from the xrays it appeared that I might have a bit of a squished nerve towards the bottom of my neck. I'm now on two weeks worth of naproxen and methocarbomol for anti-inflammatory + muscle relaxants. I've got an order for PT, but due to my job I won't be able to start that for a few more days. The drugs and time seem to be helping, but I really need to get a massage and do more work to get that part of my spine active and healthy. I'll keep working on getting a foam roller and I appreciate everybody's input on the matter.
