Default Working One Side Only

About two months ago I slightly hurt my shoulder. I decided to work through the discomfort by lowering the weights a bit and avoiding certain exercises. Unfortunately the shoulder does not seem to be getting better. I am now considering eliminating all upper body exercises and just concentrate on the lower body to see if the shoulder will improve. A friend recommended continuing working only one side of the upper body. He said he read a study that showed even with working only one side the other side will show strength gains although not at the same rate as the good side. Does anyone know if this is true or just a myth?

That will likely further the imbalances you have which caused this problem, in all likelihood leading to similar problems with that shoulder. Instead, rest the shoulder from all "traditional" exercise for a few weeks, and start a corrective exercise program for your shoulders. When you are feeling better (2-4 weeks) add back in your upper body program while continuing the corrective stuff. JMO.

^ Totally agree. It depends what the exact physiological issue is in that shld as well. I've personally never seen anyone 'gain' w/ unilateral training but perhaps maybe not atrophy as much as they would've w/o it...who knows. I personally wouldn't do it.
It reminds me of mind-body training; the experiment of having you concentrate on, say, your right hand. Do you feel it warmer? Is it because of a circulation increase that you "willed" to that area? That sort of thing...

Increasing muscle imbalances will seldomly be beneficial. There is a good chance by working unilaterally you will just create more problems (back). Take Julies advice and rest it.
