Default Injury/Lifting Today

Hi all,

I just have a quick couple of questions. I pulled something in my lower back last Thursday while doing deadlifts. I jerked my back at a critical moment, and, pow. Pain. My lower back has been sore ever since, but the pain has mellowed enough that I really want to go and do some exercise today before my muscles atrophy and I gain 10lb. So my question is, given that I have some lingering lower back pain/stiffness (although it is much improved), should I, a. do deadlifts as scheduled and just toughen up?; b. do deadlifts, but go very light on the weight (perhaps just the oly bar)?, or c. skip the deadlifts altogether and move straight on to the bulgarian split squats and lunges?

Thanks!

1. When did the pain begin? During the DL
2. What were you doing at the time? Or did the pain come on gradually over time? Deadlifting, and it came on all at once.
3. Where, anatomically, is the pain? Lower back, center.
4. What does the pain feel like? Sharp? Dull? Aching? Stabbing? Dull, aching.
5. Is the pain constant, or intermittent, or only on certain motions? It's fairly constant, but mild. Worse when sitting or bending.
6. What motions make your pain worse? Bending.
7. What, if anything, makes your pain better? Lying down, taking pain killers.
8. Does your pain radiate to any other part of your body? Originally it was radiating into my right leg, but that seems to have stopped now.
9. What things could you do before, that you cannot do now because of your injury? Bend over comfortably.
10. What is your main concern regarding the pain and its consequences? I just want it to heal so that I can get back to business. The weights are calling for me!
11. Have you ever injured that part of your body before? If so, how? No.
12. Is your pain getting worse over time? And if so, how much worse over what time period? No.

Hi
Please get it looked at by a physician/ PT before you decide to hit the weights. Any time you have pain radiating down a leg or radiculopathy, it should be checked.
In the meantime stick to bodyweight exercises and avoid spinal loading.
Please think long term, big picture etc., as you would not want to aggravate an injury by loading it prematurely.
You also might benefit from Mckenzie's back extensions so google them and start doing them.
