Knee Pain
1. When did the pain begin
Three months ago.
2. What were you doing at the time? Or did the pain come on gradually over time?
Morning after a flag football game. No single incident during the game.
3. Where, anatomically, is the pain?
Just below outside of right knee. If front of knee is 12:00 this would be 3:00 mostly on the top of the bone you can feel coming up from the lower leg-tibia?
4. What does the pain feel like? Sharp? Dull? Aching? Stabbing? Shooting?
All of above at different times
5. Is the pain constant, or intermittent, or only on certain motions?
6. What motions make your pain worse?
Squatting, even to pick something up from the floor.
7. What, if anything, makes your pain better?
Advil provides temporary relief.
8. Does your pain radiate to any other part of your body?
No.
9. What things could you do before, that you cannot do now because of your injury?
No mobility problem, just pain.
10. What is your main concern regarding the pain and its consequences?
11. Have you ever injured that part of your body before? If so, how?
No.
12. Is your pain getting worse over time? And if so, how much worse over what time period?
No better, no worse.
I'm requesting info for my 22 year old son. He is not one to complain unless it's pretty bad. Back round, he has wrestled and played football from 1st through 12th grades and wrestled 2 years at the D1 college level so cumulative wear and tear is possible. He finally got to see an Ortho yesterday who took x-rays, poked and prodded and said, "give it a few more weeks, maybe it will get better." He didn't think an MRI would be worthwhile. My first thought was just inflammation and that a month of Advil may cure it, but I'm no expert. I don't see how something that hasn't improved in 3 months is going to improve on it's own in 3 weeks. Any help is appreciated.

Ummm ... yeah ... good point!! It's really not his fault though ... if he knows it is not surgical, and he's a surgeon, then it is really out of his hands.
My initial thoughts in reading this were
1. Lateral meniscus
2. Coronary ligaments (attach the meniscus to the bone)
3. Distal ITB issues
See if he can get a referral to physical therapy ... a good manual therapist should be able to figure it out and treat it appropriately.
This site lists some graduates of their certification program (which is rigorous and tends to produce quality therapists) ... not sure how long you are willing to travel as all of these appear to be about 2 hours from you. (Assuming you are near Harrisburg).
What is up with PA? Every town that I Mapquested came back with TWO different locations ... Mechanicsburg, Doylestown, Willow Grove, Springfield?!?!

Hey, we're a much bigger state than CT and our forefathers probably just weren't too creative. I'm just happy not to live in Intercourse or Blue Ball.
Have a great Holiday.

Many years ago we had a family friend living in Reading, and we went for a tour of the countryside once when we were visiting ... I was astounded at some of the "creative" names that your forefathers came up with!!!!

Julie, I just wanted to follow up and let you know what's going on here. I called the contact you gave me in Pittsburgh. Dr. Mock is now longer at that practice so I spoke to one of the other chiros who has been trained with the Graston Method of IASTM. My son has seen him twice and is getting much better already. He has another appointment tomorrow and probably two more next week, which should finish his treatments. Thanks again for your help. Your the best.

At his last appointment the Doc noticed a bruise on the sore knee. He apologized for being too aggressive with his last treatment. My son told me that he didn't have the heart to tell the guy that he'd got that falling off a bar stool while trying to get into the second row of a picture the night before.
