Default Ankle pain... thoughts?

R sided ankle pain x weeks, getting worse despite stopping and/or severely limiting my running (now only once/week). Much worse with impact--rope jumping? Nuh uh. I did less than 20 secs this weekend and it was a NO GO.

The pain varies in location, sometimes it shoots anteriorly through the talar joint, and other times it's more lateral, around the lateral malleolus, radiating to the top of my foot. Shoes are new. I lift in Nike Frees.

Today, I started having pain with walking. Not every step, but randomly--probably at least 30 times today.

I have had no injuries to this area that I was aware of. I have an appt with the sports med doc next week as well as a chiro/ART appointment with a new provider next week, but does anyone have any thoughts as to what this might represent? I'm starting to worry about a stress fracture with the impact pain.

Thanks,

Tina

I know it has bothered you off and on for a while ... have you ever had any imaging done?

I had a similar pain a few years ago ... had an MRI and they found ganglion cysts inside my ankle posterior to the talus, sort of sandwiched between the talus and the fibula. Right where my pain was (which also radiated laterally and dorsally).

Also was thinking of you a few days ago ... I read Mike Boyle's new article on T-Nation about Essential Mobility exercises ... I like his Ankle Drill, and his Leg Swing (for the ankle). Might give those a try ...

Have you asked Bip?

Is it possible that you're still adjusting to the Nike Frees? I haven't been following your log, but I know when I first got my Frees and began to wear them all the time that my feet would feel fatigued. It took a while for my feet to get used to doing their share of the work. It was just plain old muscle soreness.

Nope, I've been in them for a loooong time now, Lisa...

This is pain that is sharp/stabbing and transient, radiating either through the talar joint or around the lateral malleolus. It definitely doesn't feel like muscular origin.

It is weird, though, that today I wore my running shoes with my scrubs instead of the frees or my dansko clogs and I didn't have pain. Jill noted that I wouldn't tend to "grip" with my toes in those shoes, so I dunno...

Thanks for the help, ladies.
