Default Painful Shoulder Problem

Hello all--another shoulder question I hope you can answer for me.

Just stared working out seriously for the last 2 months (big compound movements to gain muscle, Im a skinny guy.) About 7 months ago I had started to work out and got the same pain but ignored the injury (of course this made it even worse.I had to stop working out and pain went away.) The injury just happened again 4 days ago while benching.

When I Bech it stings bad on the right shoulder. I'm hoping someone can tell me how to fix this so that I can keep working out and getting bigger and stronger.

1. What were you doing when you first injured the shoulder? (ie what exercise, or something outside the gym) Bech Press

2. Is there pain at rest or only when you do the pressing movements? Sharp pain when pressing, but sometimes randomly while sitting\driving

3. Does the pain hurt locally in the shoulder, or does it radiate anywhere else? Just Shoulder

4. Are you able to lie on that shoulder at night? Yes

5. Does the pain keep you awake at night? No

6. Have you tried any particular stretches or exercises to alleviate? If so, which ones? Not yet- think I will start doing rows after reading the threads on this site.

7. What, if any thing, makes it feel better? Rest and relax

8. How's your posture? Probably not the best..

thanks to all in advnace for your help.

Shafty, I'm glad that your posting problems were fixed and that you can now post. It sounds like your problem might be a strain or possibly some impingement (or maybe a combination of both).

I'd highly recommend that you start working on improving your posture ... check out the Neanderthal No More series of articles at T-Nation. There, Eric and Mike give you some great advice on how to fix your posture (there are 4 articles total).

Then take a look at Push Ups, Face Pulls, and Shrugs where Bill and Mike give you some good ideas for shoulder health ...

In the meantime, if the shoulder is sore, rest it and ice it.

What does your current program look like? I'm curious to know if your pushes and pulls are balanced.

Hey Julie - This one is worthy of making a sticky out of it. IMHO

Has links to great info for those of us struggling with the shoulder a bit.

Just a thought..

There's another good article at t-nation too talking about shoulder pain (tendonitis) and other info on training the movements of the shoulder http://www.t-nation.com/readArticle.do?id=459846

I'm having some shoulder pain as well. I went to the chiropractor at the gym for an ultra sound and some heat. It's all the heavy lifting all of a sudden that my body needs to adjust to. Also having incredible knee pain. I feel it when I walk, when I bend down to pick something up or sit with it tucked underneath me. It's bad, I'm afraid to do heavier squats.
