Default Pain medicine

My grandmother is about to have knee replacement surgery next week, and she is allergic (i.e. it makes her vomit...a lot) to pain medicine. I was just wondering if there are alternative (to the traditional) medicine that might be easier on her but effective with pain management.

Thanks!

Jamie

Get her some good ice packs! But her docs will work with her to get her a good pain med ...

Vomiting isn't an allergic reaction. It's a normal and common side effect of most pain meds, particularly the opioids like morphine and the stuff they're going to give her. You just have remember to prescribe (and give) an anti-nauseant if you're going to have opioids around.

Itching is also not an allergic reaction to opioids. We commonly prescribe an anti-itching med too.

I agree with bryan. Compazine, reglan, or phenergan are good options, have generics available, and are covered by most health plans. Zofran is good too, but her plan may not cover it or require prior authorization because it's typically prescribed for pregnancy. Her doc will be able to provide her with something that'll help.

I hope everything goes well and wish her a speedy recovery!

a tcv vc vc vc vc vc vclllllllj <--from Jack

This morning I saw her and she finally has a doc that prescribed anti-nausea to go with some new pain patch that delivers med for 72 hours. She can takeTylenol on top of that around her rehab time so I think she'll be MUCH better!

Thanks guys!!!
