Default Pain when Squatting

I had surgery (meniscus repair) little over 2 weeks ago and have been doing very little training (other than some rehab) almost exclusively lower body. I have no pain when doing deadlifts anymore but still a slight pain when squating (bw) past parallel (ATG). The pain isn't in my knee but above the knee in the Vastus Mediali area. I can work through it with a little discomfort but I am hoping that it is something that will go away.

Is this a normal feeling when getting back to squats after a long layoff or post knee surgery? I am assuming that its more of a muscle soreness/weakness from the inactivity (little leg work since November 2006) than another problem but was wondering if anyone had advice.

Thanks

P.S. I plan to talk to my DR about it at my next appointment in a couple of weeks.

If you are only 2 weeks post op from a meniscal REPAIR, I would avoid ATG squats ... and talk to your surgeon ... and if necessary demonstrate for him as many surgeons are not well versed in various exercises.

Thanks for your concern Julie. I talked to my surgeon about 4 days after my surgery and he said I was cleared to get back into lifting, to just do what I can handle. I do have an appointment with him for another check up in a couple of weeks but was wondering if anyone had past experiences similar to mine to see if should proceed with squats until my check up.

Well, if that's what he said, and you are confident that he knows what a full squat looks like, then okay. But clearly you aren't "handling" full ATG squats, so I would lay off them until things are healed a bit more.

I thought the rule was "if it hurts don't do it".

You should talk to your doctor first. Don't attempt it unless you are 100% sure it is safe to do so. Your health is more important than anything else.
