Default Exercising While going through Chemo

I was diagnosed with Cancer on the back of the tounge, Radiation 6 weeks 5 days a week and Chemo 10 weeks once a week, I want to try to keep my energy levels as high as possible. I will have to start using a Feeding tube at some point because the radiation will fry my throat about 3 weeks into it. Is it possible to keep my energy levels high at this point or am I in denial and I won't be able to lift a finger? Has anyone went through this before.

I have a friend who had tongue cancer at a young age (20s) - as I recall he had surgery, radiation the first time around - but he was out of state at the time so I don't remember his "in person" fatigue levels. He was in excellent shape before his diagnosis though.

He has, unfortunately, had a recurrence recently and is undergoing chemo (which is working well for him). However, I'd advise you to be in really good shape if you can before chemo because he couldn't eat like for a week and was hospitalized just for the side effects. Subsequent courses have been less hard on him. Not to pry but I assume they are testing to see if yours is an HPV related cancer? His turned out not to be, but they are using the chemo course they would if it was HPV and it is working pretty well I guess.

Good luck with your treatments.

I've only worked WITH patients going through chemo, and had the good fortune to never go through it myself. Chemotherapy is physically quite taxing. However, I would sit down now with your dietician (your oncologist will be working with one) to discuss your energy concerns.

The big emphasis will, of course, be on your recovery. A cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy are both life-altering events, as you already know. You will have horrible days and better days depending on the cycle of chemo you are put onto. There's not really any way for us to answer this question for you because everyone's chemo protocol is slightly different. These are all things you should talk to your oncologist about though. It's of enough significance to you that you should work with the person who is going to be most involved with your care.

A good person to ask would be Alwyn Cosgrove as he has been through chemo himself ... you can find him through his website http://www.alwyncosgrove.com
