Default Wrist Pain

I've had some soreness in my left wrist for a couple of months now, but over the last 2 weeks it has started to bother me a lot more as I'm doing NROL's Strength I program where I'm pushing heavier weights.

The pain hasn't prevented me from working out up 'til now, as I've been able to do everything except chin-ups (supinated grip) - I've just been subbing in other exercises, such as pull-ups or nuetral grip chins. Now, it hurts just to turn my palm up - in fact, I can't turn my hand and lay my palm face-up on a table without a fair amount of pain. The pain starts on the outside of the wrist and comes over the top of the knobby bone on the top outside of the wrist (i'm not in the business - don't know what it's called ).

I'm at a keyboard everyday, so I'm wondering if it's associated with that and being aggravated by the weights? Any other opinions or advice would be greatly appreciated. Right now, I'm just doing the ice and ibuprofen treatment.

Where you are describing is your distal radio-ulnar joint, and that's where that pronation/supination movement occurs in the wrist although most of that movement occurs up at the elbow. Any elbow pain on that side? Might just need a bit of mobilization, but can't really do hands-on treatment through the internet!! Might need to see a doc/get a referral to PT for this one.

No pain at all in the elbow - the pain doesn't extend above the wrist. In fact, if anything the pain extends a little down into the hand.

I'll sound like I know what I'm talking about when I tell the doc I need help with my distal radio-ulnar joint, althought the charade will end if he asks me another question.

What part of your wrist do you consider "the outside"?

When my left arm is lying flat on a table, the "outside" would be the left side starting at the pinky finger up to the elbow.

I think he's talking about his ulnar styloid process, Julie. Maybe aggravating extensor carpi ulnaris?

Yes, ulnar styloid, but extensor carpi ulnaris wouldn't bother him with supination ... it is likely a joint thing ... distal radio-ulnar ...

Unless it's aggravated by the stretch component of supination...

Hard to tell since I don't know where in the wrist the pain is actually.

Stretching during supination sounds accurate.

Yes, but you have to look at passive movements as well as active ... contractile tissue involvement would be active and passive in opposite directions, and non-contractile would be active and passive in the same direction ... bottom line Hunter ... if it is still bothering you, go see a doctor.
