Default Groin/Hip flexor pain when doing walking spiderman

I sometimes get a sharp pain in my hip flexors when I do walking spidermans, and sometimes even when I deadlift. there is no swelling or tenderness when I palpate the area. It only occurs occasionally when I perform these exercises.

Anyone have any idea why?

One more thing I forgot to mention: I have some left knee pain when I squat IF I do not warm up properly AND "sweep the floor" with my knees

What do you mean 'sweep the floor' with your knees?

I meant pushing my knees outwards as I squat down and as I come up from a squat

Is it in your iliopsoas or your tensor fascia lata?

It's on the medial aspect of my thigh, so either the iliopsoas or the sartorious judging from my anatomy books.

I find that if I were to lift my right leg sideway to try to stretch my abductors, I trigger the same pain on my left side when I return my right leg to the ground.

The strength of my left leg isn't compromised either as I can still do a pistol equally as well on either leg without pain

Jin, I'm still confused as to exactly where your pain is! Usually hip flexor pain is up high, in the anterior part of the hip in the region of the inguinal ligament with TFL pain just lateral to that. If this pain is down in your groin there are many structures that it could be. See the sticky at the top of the sub-forum and try to answer those questions for us ...

Ok I read the stickie, so here goes:
1. The pain began a few weeks ago.
2. The pain occurs when I do stuff like good mornings, deadlifts, or getting on to my bicycle (which is right leg going over the bike first)
3. The pain is on the anterior aspect of my upper left thigh, near the groin crease (see the pictures in the posts above)
4. It's a sharp shooting pain
5. The pain only occurs with certain motions. Otherwise it is not there
6. I notice the pain most on the top of my good mornings, and deadlifts. some times it occurs when I perform a lateral lunge, and when I get on to or off my bike
7. The pain goes away almost as quick as it came on.
8. There is no radiation
9. I do not seem to suffer any weakness or loss of ROM
10. I'm just afraid that this might be a warning sign of something worse to come if it persists.
11. I have never injured that part of my body before. I have however pulled a muscle of the left side of my back a few years ago, but it has since healed and does not trouble me anymore. I do get some knee pain sometimes on squatting, but that goes away as long as I force my knees out when I squat
12. The pain is not getting worse at the moment, nor is it getting better

I hope this is enough. I just have a thought: could this have anything to do with the height of my bike seat? I have been raising it a little higher than before.

I'm 99% sure you and I are experiencing the same problem. I have a few quick questions to be sure though. These are all things that I've been experiencing and have noticed.

-is the pain sharper in the moments when you first wake up or first activate the muscle after a long rest (eg. after sitting for a few hours)?
-Does it appear to go away after some light movement/mobility type things (swinging your leg etc that sort of thing).
-Does it reappear if you further the ROM for at least the first minute? Mine goes away for walking but returns for the first minute of a run and then persists a bit all the way through.
-Is it a dull pain in general?
-Does it hurt to bike? (i am much more ok with biking at the moment than running, perhaps because its not being used as much?)

Maybe this will help:

My pain is up towards the brevis/longus and tract areas. Right up tucked under my hip almost. However it has recently extended some into my gluts as well (which has prompted me to stop running for the time being and figure this out).

If it sounds like we are having the same issue I'll post any info I come across here. If not I'll start another thread.

Some initial thoughts though are just that we may have overworked the muscle and need to let it rest/recover for a good while. I let mine sit for a full week (well I did still lift but no legs and not much that would activate it outside of walking around) and the pain did go away. It came back however after a day or two of running again (maybe more time?).

Jin are you stretching your hip flexors at all?

Here are links to two similar stretches that might help ...

rgv:
1. no it doesnt hurt in the morning at all, or even after long periods of inactivity
2. light movements doesnt seem to make any difference to it
3. the pain doesnt really occur when I run, or at least I do not notice it
4. It does not hurt at all unless I perform those movements
5. it does not hurt to bike except the initial bit of getting on to the bike

I think I have been stretching my hip flexors, but using the reverse warrior lunge that I learnt from the Magnificient mobility DVD. Maybe that stretch isn't enough.

Do you think it's just a tight hip flexor?

Goodluck with the healing process. A lot of darts can be thrown at this board. Hopefully, you changed your regiment to do some maint. work in the area. Nothing heals immediately, so give it some time and use he mobility DVD to keep training 3D. Obviously you need to foam roll (or tennis ball roll) your inferior body.

I've always liked Stuart McGills input on deads.... if you can't bend over and touch your toes comfortably you shouldn't be deadlifting a barbell.

Try the two stretches that I linked ... it could be a tight hip flexor, but it also could be something with your hip joint which is in that location, just deeper ...

Julie, just an update:

The stretches seem to be helping to ease the problem It doesn't occur as often anymore. I find that now I only get it when I begin squat with a wide stance or when I perform sumo deadlift. It happens in the early sets then it subsides. The feeling is more medial now and only happens at the top of the ROM after I explode out of the hole

Good! Keep stretching them! The hip flexors are also hip internal rotators, so when they are tight they often limit squatting which requires hip external rotation.

Another update:

I can feel a small hard lump on the upper part of my left groin crease, like a knot on the ligament or tendon
