Default Bruised Humeral Head

According to the orthopedic surgeon's interpretation of my MRI, a good portion of my humeral head is bruised (light area on images). While I can not discount the possibility of having walked into a door jam at some point in the previous 6-8 weeks, I'm guessing it is more likely attributable to my recent gymnastic endeavors. More specifically doing giant swings over the high bar the first week of January. I definitely felt as though I strained my right shoulder that night, and the inability to raise it above horizontal two days later confirmed that assessment. The ortho also stated there is some minor fraying of the supraspinatus. With time and a cortisone shot last week, my ROM is greatly improved. I start PT this week.

Russ mentioned the humeral head is slightly impacted during the impinging movement and successive impacts could result in a bruise. My question would be is there anyway to prevent the bruising from recurring (short of stopping gymnastics)? For the giants, my grip was either at, or slightly narrower than shoulder width. Would a slightly wider grip minimize the bruising/impingement? Any recommendations regarding strengthening scapular stabilizers. Would heavy chin-ups or pull-ups to reduce the impacts of traction?

Talk about this with your PT ... be sure to fully explain the types of activities you want to get back to (and be specific). They should be able to assess your scapular muscles and determine what exercises would be best for YOU to be doing.
As for that movement/drill causing the bruising ... honestly to me (with minimal to no gymnastic experience) it seems that the only way it could cause that bruise is if you are lacking significant scapular upward rotation (which certainly could be the case). The PT can and should assess this as well.

Thank you for the guidance, Julie. I had my evaluation this morning and the PT noted winging and tightness within the shoulder. Actually she told me a lot more, but it was information overload. She seems very competent and I'm actually looking forward to going back over the next few weeks. Forgot to ask her about the bruising. Next time.
