Injuries and RehabTell us where it hurts! Do a quick search before asking about your shoulder injury to make sure your question hasn't already been answered (about 50 times), and read the sticky post first.
Is there a nerve that runs from the shoulder along the arm all the way to the pinky? For a couple of weeks if I sleep on my side it feels like the under side of me arm is asleep and the tingling runs all the way to my pinky.
I know pain in the pinky is not a usual question but I thought I would ask.

I'd be willing to bet that you have something impinging upon the nerve root in your neck ... go to the doc and get it checked out ... numbness is nothing to fool around with ...

I have ulnar neuropathy. I causes that symtop from for elbow down when I sleep on my side of sleep hugging my arms to my chest. It's hard to stop that...
I learned about this in Injury Management this semester. You're laying in such a way that you're pinching your brachial plexus, I want to say specifically your ulnar nerve.
If you can, sleep on your back with a pillow under your knees. If you have to sleep on your side, keep your arm out just in front of your body (so you're not laying on it, but it's not straight out either) instead of wrapped around you, and don't let your shoulder round forward.
I'm not a doctor, a physical therapist or even a certified trainer. That's just stuff I learned in class mixed with intuition and google skillz. Do what you want with it.
Do you have / have you ever had any spinal injuries?

I've made some huge mistakes, but they were necessary, because without them I wouldn't have learned anything.

Yes, all of that is true, but it is also possible that when he is lying on that side his cervical spine is compressing his C8 nerve root (between his 7th cervical vertebra and 1st thoracic). The fact that the pain/numbness starts at his shoulder and runs all the way down makes me think it's not the ulnar nerve as ulnar nerve entrapments occur at the elbow most of the time. JMO ... I still think it is best to be evaluated in person by a qualified professional ...

Agreed. Like I said I'm not a professional, I was more or less taking a guess, for education's sake.

How do you think I feel? I'm the guy asking the question on the Internet.
Julie,
I tend to think that it is more an issue with the ulnar nerve than anything more nefarious. While my arm has fallen asleep as described I have much more issue with how I place my elbow on my desk chair, truck arm rest, etc.
Also, I was absolutely dead asleep when my arm went to sleep. I may have been off but it felt like from the shoulder.

Right ... if it were coming from your shoulder, it is likely NOT ulnar nerve entrapment ... it could be thoracic outlet syndrome ... it could be cervical nerve root compression ... it could be anything ... get it checked out!!
