Default Hip Arthritis

My father in law has "slight" detioration in his hip, Im guessing femur. Its painful for him to walk and I dont think his career of desk jobs has helped this. Im trying to convince him to start doing some training for it, but it is rather hard since he believes more in healers and other mumbo jumbo.

I refered him to EC's feel better for 10 bucks article, hoping he might take away something from it. Instead he listened to the chiropractors stretching advice. I havent given him any type of assessment, but I was wondering if bodyweight squats and unweighted romanian deadlifts would work for him? I believe that to help the pain, he needs to work within the problem areas ROM.

Does this sound right?

Tony, in all likelihood, his hip flexors are tight (from being a desk jockey) and his gluteals are asleep ... he would initially benefit from a MM type program focusing on releasing the hip flexors and getting the glutes firing again. If the deterioration is only "slight" then it is probably not the source of his pain, but rather the muscle imbalance around his hip is the more likely culprit.
I'm sure his doctor would refer him to physical therapy ... would he be open to going? Sometimes family members don't want to hear it from another family member ... they need to hear it from a "professional" ...

No problem, thanks alot. Ill talk to him more about stretches and such when I get the chance again. It got him interested but the "stretches" the chiro gave him are kind of bogus. One is getting in a squat with your butt almost on the floor, and hold. Kind of contributes to any imbalance in my eyes.

Mother in law was talking awhile back that he needs to get his hip replaced. Thats what got me asking what the doctors had told him. He mentioned that he may go back for a follow up, which I will recommend.

If he went to a physician who told him that him that he might need a hip replacement, what's his diagnosis?

I myself am curious to what his diagnosis is.

I agree with the thought of tight hip flexors and weak adductors. Standing movements (strong postural walking), corrective stabilization and balance movements (Toe touches with progression to contralateral one legged toe touches) and flexibility (static and SMR) could really help him out.

Progression should be slow and with moderate weight add ons over periods of time.
