Wrist Pain
Yesterday mid-morning I started experiencing some wrist pain that I will describe as best as I can here and see if anyone has any ideas...
Pain is only experienced during movement or when palpated.
There is no pain in a neutral position.
There is no burning, tingling, etc as common in carpel tunnel.
Flexion produces more pain than extension - but it is present in both movements.
Ulnar deviation produces more pain than Radial deviation -but it present in both.
There is not much discomfort in pronation and supination as compared with other movements.
There is no swelling.
At this time I have only iced the joint at night with some relief. I have not taken any NSAIDs at this time. I am not sure what might have exacerbated this issue....
Thoughts? Thanks in advance...
Newman

Newman, when did it start? ie how long ago, and what were you doing when it first started?
Where in your wrist is the pain? (ie ulnar side, radial side, dorsal, ventral, central?)

Pain started yesterday at about 10:15 am. I was putting up a chart I had just finished writing in - binder style, not heavy. Pain is more ulnar with some radiation both centrally and ventrally, but primarily dorsal. Axial loading is very painful. Thanks for your reply, I should have anticipated your questions...

I'm hoping Bill or someone else pops in here to comment as hand/wrist injuries are not a strong point of mine ...
One more question though, any clicking or popping with movement?
It sounds like you could have strained the ECU (extensor carpi ulnaris) ... some ice and anti-inflammatories would most likely help ...

Except there's no clear mechanism to support a strain (unless it was a VERY heavy chart)....
I'm always a bit leery of less-than-24-hours-pain, so I'm curious to see how this has evolved in the past few days. Also, I'm curious how you loaded your wrist axially to determine there was pain.
No traumatic events?

Typing this messgae again.... I aplogize if I can't clearly describe things. If I use the wrong term it is because I haven't studied this stuff in a couple of years. If you don't use it, you lose it to an extent. You are right to be leery. I should not whine about my silly wrist pain. I'll make sure I wait 72 hours before asking questions.
Pain continues but has lessened in severity down to 6 from 8.
I have not taken any medications.
There is no warmth, redness, swelling, crepitation.
Axial load was provided through compression at the palm using bodyweight or the other palm. This may be incorrect wording...don't know...
I am sure it will go away in a few days. Thank you for your time.

Maybe the "injury" was already there and the chart just smoked it out?
I was tying my shoe and got a cramp in my finger, despite the relatively low level of finger exertion at that moment. After that, I noticed how sore the finger was. Something tells me my finger got hurt yesterday or the day before.

Newman, don't sweat it! That's what we're here for ... sometimes the answer when things are that acute is, "I have no idea ... ice it and rest it and let's see what it's doing in a few days."
I must have skipped the axial loading part ... it still could be ECL I suppose, but I lean more toward joint/bone problems with pain during axial loading.
Is there any popping or clicking with movement? If so, what movements?
Also has it changed over the last week or so?

me too!!
Hi, I am having similar symptoms and I have no idea what is going on either.
1. The pain began about 4 days ago.
2. I woke up one morning with the pain, although this has happened on and off over the last couple of years ever since i broke my wrist in 3 places. I have a plate in my wrist, as well as a bone chip somewhere in the region of the tip of my Ulna.
3. Mostly the tip of the ulna, back oh hand, and slightly across the back of my wrist to my radius.
4. the pain ranges from dull to sharp, depending on how far i move my wrist, which has become increasingly stiff in the last couple of days.
5. Pain comes with any movement what soever
6. the worst is bending my hand backwards
7. Nothing seems to help
8. pain stays within the described region
9. the pain is limiting my wrists movement, limiting how much weight i can hold
10. Im worried that it is the chip in my wrist, and that I will have to have it surgically removed?
11. Broke wrist in 3 places, 2 of which were fixed with a plate, and the 3rd was a chip which was never treated.
12. the pain in my wrist seems to come and go and im not sure why because i cannot trace any specific actions that might cause pain. I woke up with it sore and it usually lasts a week or so, being stiff and quite useless..and then one morning the pain will be gone. But it always comes back.
If anyone knows anything about this, or if you have any suggestions, feedback would be greatly apprecitated.

Hmmmm ... well, honestly in your situation without examining your wrist in person, there is no way to really know exactly what is going on because your anatomy is altered. Have you seen a competent physical therapist?
If you do notice that it is always onset after sleeping, perhaps you are sleeping on it in a strange position. You might do well with sleeping in a splint to keep it in a neutral position.
Also, I would always do wrist range of motion exercises as part of my warm up. A good one is to lace your fingers together, then roll your wrists forward (alternately) and then backward, maybe 10 reps in each direction.
