Deadlifts may have hurt me.
Since last Monday I have had a shooting pain in my lower back. The pain is mostly on the right side but can also be felt in my right testical. The pain hasn’t gotten worse or better, it can be felt mostly in the morning when I first get out of bed and when moving from a seated to a standing position.
I went to a chiropractor on Friday and had some x-rays done along with an adjustment. He wanted me to return this week so we could go over the x-rays and figure out exactly what the problem is. I’m somewhat wary about the practice of chiropractors, all of the ones I have met in the past seemed kind of phony, plus they love to do lot’s of x-rays.
Should I continue to go to this chiropractor or should I see someone else?

See a real doctor, that sounds like it could be something serious. I'm fairly skeptical of chiroprators and they're won't be diagnosing anything serious because you're probably going to need a CAT scan or MRI if it is serious.

The chiro I go to won't do an x-ray until he's got a clear reason to do one. He also doesn't want to schedule return visits unless needed. Just like all the other "professionals," they aren't all the same.
As my wife likes to say, "What do you call the person who graduated LAST in their class at medical school?"

Adam, the fact that you are experiencing referred pain says that something is going on ... I am concerned that you might have something going on that is not visible on xray (ie disc injuries will only be visible on MRI or CTScan) that would respond poorly to chiropractic adjustment. I think you would best be helped by seeing an orthopedist who specializes in spine treatment.

Hi Everyone,
I went to my regular physician/DO yesterday and was diagnosed with a Sprang/Strain. I also got a dreaded check for a hernia, but I kind of knew that was coming. He put me on an 800mg anti-inflammatory (Can’t recall the name right now) and advised to follow-up in a week. He also provided several stretching techniques and advised to ice 20 min on followed by heat 20 min on. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the above diagnosis is all that is wrong and I can take this as a warning. Oh-yea, and I didn’t have a hernia, thank God!
I will keep everyone posted if you’re interested.
Adam

Adam,
Can you give us an idea of what stretches were recommended by the doctor. What specific area(s) are you being asked to stretch? Thanks
ZZ

Adam,
Did you experience this pain at first when you were deadlifting? SI joint injuries are typically classifed as low back disc issues but they are clearly a separate issue. The fact that you mentioned referred pain to your groin also is a characteristic of SI joint dysfunction. It is also brought upon with hip extension based movements. How is your anterior hip tightness? Hamstring tightness?

Hi Everyone,
Sorry I didn't respond to this post sooner, JP even sent me an IM that I didn't get for about a month (I go through periods of not logging on.)
Anyway, I took about two weeks off back in February and the pain totally went away. I got back to my workout and did some light deads and BANG, it's back. I haven't done any deads since, but I have also noticed that the pain comes when doing squats and back extensions. it's still felt mostly in the left, and can now be felt in my hamstring in addition to the above.
Should I go back to my doctor? I don't want to end up in physical therapy, I have no idea where I am going to find the time and money for it. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Adam

To be honest Adam, you have sudden, acute onset pain that has a referral pattern (i.e. radiation down your leg) brought on by a back extension movement.
It is time to see your doctor. Physical therapy may be just one of the possible solutions.
In the meantime, stop doing squats, back extensions and anything else that causes pain or zinging sensations down your leg(s).

Hello everyone,
I wanted to drop in and provide an update on my injury.
I finally gave up on fixing the problem myself and started physical therapy about three weeks ago. The place I am attending (PT Center in Fairlawn, Ohio) is incredible, these people really know what they are doing and they make you feel very welcome, highly recommended.
My referred pain is totally gone, my lower back pain is 90% gone, I still have a bit of a pull when doing bending movements but things are getting so much better. Really the only place I have a little pain now in my upper back deep under my lat on the right side, they say pain travels.
Anyway, I will continue to update as I progress, I think I have a few more weeks before I am at 100%, but things are going great.

Congrats. Just curious, what did they have you do? I'm currently seeing a sports medicine doctor as well as a PT as well for a hip injury, but I'm not getting the results I hoped I'd get...all I get are some passive ROM assessments, strength assessments, and various stretches/strengthening exercises based on that.
