Default Help! Suspected hip labrum tear

So I believe I have torn the labrum in my left hip. I'm not sure how severe the tear is.

I've seen a sports doctor who ordered an x-ray that I don't have the results for yet. In the meantime, my chiropractor has given me his opinion of a torn labrum. It seems to be consistent with what the sports doctor initially suspected (something in the capsule, he said).

Is this an injury with a prognosis for 100% healing? Or is it one of those "You're gimpy forever" type things? I'm a bit scared because I have some chronic injuries that just won't get better (structural things with my back, for example) and this was my GOOD side that is now injured.

I'm obviously taking time off but I want to keep up my fitness level as much as possible. I am VERY serious about working out and am really choked up about this. I know getting healthy is the main thing, but while I rest, I want to ensure I don't lose all muscle tone, cardiovascular capacity, etc.

any advice is welcome!

Hip labral tears are tricky because there's poor blood supply-hence-very slow healing, if at all. Depends on the size of the tear. They may have to do an arthrogram-I doubt if an X-ray will show you anything. There are a few docs who do hip arthroscopy if it's indicated where they could clean up the torn area. Even if it's a tear you may not need surgery though-it deoends a lot on the size of the tear and how much it impacts your activity. Good luck!
(do you swim? That would be good.)

Lauren, I agree with Erin, prognosis is varied depending on location and size of tear. This is not a very common injury ... how did you do it? One of my IRL best friends did this falling off a horse and had the arthroscopic surgery ... she recovered easily ...
And for now, swimming would be great ...

Oh CRAP.
I think I did it at the gym. I'm really not sure as there was no 'EVENT' per se. It just started to hurt like a bugger after a leg workout.

Swimming? It hurts to walk right now...so I dunno about that just yet.

My chiro said it would heal "quickly"....but now hearing this, I'm very scared! I can't fathom having surgery.
