Yesterday, I played in the local Senior Games, part of the qualifying for the Senior Olympics, for the second year. This was all basketball. Since we were local, we didn't have to qualify (=beat anynbody to get there) so we got smoked for the most part. Came in 4th out of five teams.
While I was there, I was observing the mobility of the players. Clearly, as they aged, they lost mobility. I'm sure that this is somewhat genetic but I was wondering, if anything, can be done to slow this process of decay??? In my case - and I think this applies to everyone - I attribute my loss of mobility to injury of my leg joints from 40+ years of playing basketball, primarily, but all the general pounding the body takes over time.
They had two games in the 80+ bracket, one for women and one for men. Although I was proud of the people who got out there and participated, it was kind of funny (and sad) to watch the women try to pass the ball to their teammate 5 feet away and they couldn't get it that far. This was the norm. I didn't see the final score but I'm sure it was all in the single digits. I didn't see the men's game although I did watch a few of the one where the guys were in their late 60's and 70's. There was a range of mobility but everyone had mobility issues. I can only attribute this to a wearing down of the body, especially the joints, over time. I know that it's unavoidable but I don't know if it's manipulable.
On a lighter note, when they were explaining all the particulars of the tournament and opened it up for questions, I raised my hand and asked, "Is dunking allowed?" I got a whole bunch of blank stares until I said that
I was just kidding!!!
