There are a couple of folks who frequent the board with RA. Try posting in the training or nutrition forums and I'm sure you'll get more responses. This part of JP fitness isn't all that active.

Good Luck

Default More info please

RA is an autoimmune disease like lupus (which I have.)

Are you male or female? Age? On any meds? New to working out?

A guy named Ray Audette wrote a book called "Neanderthin" about using the a paleo type diet to cure his RA and Type II diabetes. I posted this once in a thread from Traininggirl about her RA. She chose to ignore me and you could do the same, but I think that every avenue should be explored. Good luck

Here is another good site... http://www.proactivitysupport.com/about/index.htm . Like nanook said, explore all avenues and see what works best for you. Every person is different, therefore treatment plans will be different.

I was originally diagnosed with RA, but now have been possibly undiagnosed. I say possibly because the nature of autoimmune diseases is such they are so difficult to diagnose, this is becoming a long process in pinpointing exactly what I have. Were you recently diagnosed?

Ray Audette is on the right track. I have minor RA and have managed to keep it at bay.

First thing you might do is go on some type of fasting or elimination diet and see what happens to your symptoms. Proteins (except for eggs), sweet potato, green veggies, and fruits. No condiments etc. Chances are most if not all of symptoms will dissipate. That should tell you the systems are food toxin related. Most likely toxins getting absorbed in through your intestines due to leaky gut syndrome and associated modalities.

Next thing to do is test foods...reintroduce them one at a time to see which provoke symptoms. Proteins, fruits, nuts and fibrous vegetables (Paleo style diet), tend not to be problematic. Chances are you know which foods are affecting you negatively. Usually it will be wheat, dairy, and nightshade vegetables (tomatoes, potatoes, pepper, tobacco, eggplant). These will usually be HIGHLY addictive foods that you crave! I love dairy products but my body reacts to them with the RA symptoms.

Next, you gotta heal up your insides. A clove of garlic per day with grapeseed extract and a quality probiotic ALONG WITH the avoidance of toxic foods for a month oughta do it. After that the toxic foods probably won't affect you as much.

Can you explain what probiotics do for the body? Also, do you happen to know anything about Puritan's Pride products? I was wondering if they were of decent quality. Here is a copy of what is contained in their capsules:

"DIRECTIONS: For adults, take one (1) capsule one or two times daily, preferably with meals. REFRIGERATE AFTER OPENING Each capsule provides at time of manufacture 2.4 billion live cells in a culture of Lactobacillus micro-organisms: Acidophilus, Bifidus, and Rhamnosus. KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN. STORE IN A DRY PLACE AND AVOID EXCESSIVE HEAT. TAMPER RESISTANT: DO NOT USE IF SEAL UNDER CAP IS BROKEN.

Other Ingredients: Dicalcium Phosphate, Cellulose (Plant Origin), Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose, Vegetable Stearic Acid, Silica, Vegetable Magnesium Stearate."

I'll take a stab at this one. Probiotics/Microbial Food Additives. The intended purpose is to replace or invigorate a population of microbial commensals. Some products are geared toward intestinal health and many are coming out for female reproductive tract health, e.g. yeast infection preventatives. From the studies I've read many of these products have some benefits to some people. Here is what you need to be aware of though before you decide to use these products. These products are not regulated in any way. The number of "live bacteria" you are actually ingesting will vary a great deal even between lots of the same product. There are also numerous studies out showing that the listing of "ingredients" is not always what is in the capsule. There is some concern in the scientific community right now that accidental transfer of pathogenic properties or the pathogens themselves could find their way into these products. Again, because these are not regulated, there is very little control. Just a little consumer awareness. I'm not saying they aren't safe or even that they aren't useful.
