Default SpeedExperts

Bill,

I was glancing thru your contribution and liked it more than the others so that'll be my starting point.

The question is...my goal is a fastish 1.5m anytime in between now and next Feb. I was wondering if using one of these programs for a couple months would be a good way to get started for that. Go for 2-3 months doing short distance, power\strength\mechanical work now and then migrate up to more endurance based work for the next 2-3 months.

Is that ok\make sense or completely ignorant and I need a good smack'n?

Thanks for the kind words.

Do you mean 1.5 meters or 1.5 miles?

The speed experts program is specifically for developing the 40 yard dash and similar speed events.

1.5 miles

I noticed (after I bought it ) about the 40. Next year we have a thing on base where we can compete in 50-400meter dashes, so I'll deffinately be spending more time with this training than for now. But have had some trouble really finding information for training for 1.5 miles...especially when you have 6 or so months to get there!

I had just thought that doing a month or two of this type of speed training might help develop a stronger plyo base a bit and help with the relative strength\stride length enough to be benificial when I switched gears and started stretching the distance out.

It's my lame attept at periodization for the short distance run and trying to condition a little better to handle the 200-800 repeats when that time comes.

The 40 is an ATP-CP event. Your 1.5 miles is more aerobic, however some anaerobic training is necessary to PR. Assuming you can complete 1.5 miles now, it's the speed-endurance/lactate work that'll bring your time down.

If you know what time you'd like to run (assuming you know your capabilities), you can break it down into training blocks and know exactly what time you'd need to run at the end of each block.

awesome, thanks for guidance. 9:36 is the goal. Right this very moment I'd probibly be 11:30-12. After a month it'd be at the bottom end of 10...judging from previous years efforts. 9:37 is my current PR so I figure I'm able to shave off a little time. We'll just have to see
