Default Hip Issue

I've been having an issue/some pain with my left hip joint, and wouldn't mind some input... it's kind of difficult to describe, but I will give it a shot.

Basically, I have some tightness in the joint. For example, when stretching my hamstrings, I have no problem on the right side, but when stretching the left I feel resistance in the hip that causes a bit of pain. I can still stretch it nearly as far as the right, but it takes a little longer, and is slightly uncomfortable.

I also notice it specifically with unilateral stuff. It is not noticeable with conventional and romanian deadlifts. However, if I try to bend over and touch my toes on just one leg, it becomes quite noticeable. I also feel it when doing lunges or step-ups, but not squats.

Is this some kind of an imbalance in my hip? I've been stretching all of the usual suspects (hamstrings, glutes, etc) regularly and haven't noticed much change. Are there any other exercises, perhaps unilateral, that I could use to try to correct the imbalance? (if that is in fact the issue) Thanks.

Where in the joint is the tightness? Front, deep in groin, etc,?

What stretch reproduces the tightness?

Where do you feel it during single leg ex.?

The tightness is most noticeable in the front, I would say, though a basic one leg out hamstring stretch on the floor is what makes me feel it the most. When I do this stretch, it is most notable when the glute is fully extended.

It's really kind of difficult to pinpoint exactly where the tightness is. When I do single-leg exercises, it doesn't hurt or feel tight in the same manner, but rather just feels weaker than the other side.

Thanks for the input....

If you pull your knee to chest does it feel like a pinch in the front of the hip or a pull in the back?
If you cross the affected leg over the other "man-style" and bend forward what happens?
If you stand with weight equal on both feet and bend forward to touch your toes, what happens? Do the same thing 10 times. What happens?

What happens if you do a single leg squat? Does the knee collapse inward? Does your trunk twist a little? Do you feel a barrier to range of motion at the hip? If so, where.

1. When I pull my knee to the chest, I don't feel much... if anything, pull in the back.
2. No problem bending forward man-style (nice term), it is not prevalent here.
3. Touching toes... MUCH less noticeable than on one leg, no change after 1o
4. One leg squat, knee stays in place, trunk might twist a little since I can feel the barrier somewhat, predominately in the back of my hip.

The more I think about it, the tightness seems to be focused at the rear of the joint, near my extreme-lower back.

Thanks for the help Bill!

This is kind of an old problem I was having, but I'm trying to revisit it now... anyway, I'm still having similar problems with my hip joint, though they have been at the back of my mind until recently.

I just started working on single-leg squats and trying to get to pistols, and as such really managed to pinpoint the problem a little better. The single-leg squats on my left leg are basically impossible, which I somehow didn't notice before. When dropping down in the squat, once I reach near parallel, everything pretty much gives out, and I can't continue. It isn't noticeable with a two-leg barbell squat.

From doing whatever research I could online (not the best of sources always) I now suspect that it might be femoral anterior glide syndrome that is troubling me... does this make sense? If so, what are your suggestions on where I should go for treatment?

Thanks
JB

Is the single leg squat painful or just weak?

It's also worth noting that it hasn't improved or become worse over the last ~6 months as far as I can tell, and it hasn't stopped me from increasing my deadlift significantly.
