Default grade 2 Hamstring tear

Hi Guys,

I've been a lurker for a long time.

Was playing football 1.5 weeks ago and tore\strained my hamstring (short head). Am having had some pretty intense physio (massage, ultrasound etc) and it is getting better and stronger slowly . The bruise started to come out about 4 days ago but nowhere near the tear is. The bruise runs from my calf muscle (yellow, light purple) up to just about middle of my upper leg. The worst is black\deep red but it doesn't even hurt there. Most of the back of my leg is bruised all apart from where it actually hurts.

- Is this normal - my physio says it is but I still don't understand how my entire leg can be bruised - I guess its is just freaking me out a little. ?

Has anyone else had this?

thanks
jacko

Pretty normal response. The bleeding from the tear clears toward the surface. The worse the tear, the more blood needs to clear out. Don't sweat it.

BTW, Ultrasound is pretty useless. If you can warm-up actively, do so. Also, just in case, dynamic flexibility exercises have been found to be superior in restoring functional flexibility to the hip with a lower recurrence of re-injury of the hamstrings compared to static stretching.

I tore my hammie last year playing football, and the entire back side of my leg between my knee and glute was black. It took a good 3 months to heal. Since then, I always incorporate dynamic stretching into my warmup, and I haven't had a problem since.
