Default Sprained MCl

Recomendations for Rehab? I am 5 days out. I am currently doing straight leg raise to front side and back. Started light leg extensions, calf raises, and single leg RDL. I ride a stationary bike before excercising. I am also alternating hot and cold packs.

I am currently walking with somewhat of a limp.

It was evaluated by an ER physician because I thought it was more serious

If you are walking with a limp...it doesn't sound good. Why doesn't anyone listen to their bodies anymore?

Not a bad limp. Its more like getting used to walking again b/c i was on cruches for 3 days.

Ryan,

When using crutches go from 2 to one (on the side opposite the sprain) to reduce load on the affect ligament until normal gait is restored. It'll feel like you're hardly using it but makes a big difference in outcome.

In most cases, even severe MCL sprains rehab well. Use pain/discomfort as you guideline and do not train through pain.

When you can, start with bridging exercises to add weight bearing, progress to single leg bridge, TKE (terminal knees extension in standing using elastic resistance...be careful as full extension may be painful), shallow squats, shallow step-ups, and then increase the range as you tolerate. Do not be overly aggressive. It's not necessary and won't make the ligament heal faster as that is what determines your progress. Exercise is to restore function.

I'd seriously consider doing some PT.

Thanks Bill I am trying to get a referal to a PT. Thank you for the suggestions I will use them as i recover.
