Default Ring finger hurts when pressure is applied to an object

I jammed my finger about a month and a half ago playing basketball. I've kept playing in a rec. league since then and i rejammed it everygame to a minor, varying degree. Well, going for a loose ball in a pickup game, my finger got stuck on a guys wrist and split apart pretty hard (spock hand split). Since then I've been taping it to my middle finger when I play. That's helped not hurt it more, but its not getting better. I cannot pick anything significant up without it hurting. If I have to squeeze something, it hurts. For example, I picked up my cereal bowl from the top down and it hurt. So, I can't workout or do anything with my hand. The pain is located at the knuckle above my wedding right (2nd knuckle from the tip), on the inner right side. I can feel the pain go up my finger to the 3rd knuckle on the backside of my hand.

Is this just a jammed finger that's taking forever to heal, or something far worse? Thanks for the help.

My X-ray vision is limited by distance.

Go to the ER and get an X-ray to rule out a fracture. If it's not broken, stop doing things that make it hurt more like playing basketball. Work on increasing range of motion and grip strength gently and progressively.

Thanks for the advice Bill. I'll stop doing things that make it hurt. Luckily, I tape it to my middle finger and it doesn't hurt (at all) when playing basketball. Good thing since I just paid $100 to play in two different rec. leagues. I'll setup a doctor's visit in the next couple of weeks.

Could a finger be fractured and still be able to be used? I was worried it may be more of a muscle or ligament thing based on the location. Thanks again!
