Default Why does my right shoulder hurt when doing dips?

It feels as though I tore something and it gets real warm and if I press on it or flex it starts to really hurt. No other exercise causes this pain for me. If I lay off of dips then the pain goes away for a couple months until I try starting doing Dips again. Just wondering if you guys know what it could be.

Um, okay, a little logic first. Stop doing dips. Not everyone can do them and very few people should be doing them. Don't worry, you won't waste away.

Most likely you're either not stable enough in the shoulder or you are exceeding your available range of motion of shoulder extension. Either way you're potentially causing repetitive trauma to your AC joint, rotator cuff, and subacromial bursae.

You may also want to consider putting yourself through a cycle of scapular stabilization and rotator cuff strengthening.

Bill, when you say very few people should be doing them, how do you know if you are one of them? I do them all the time. Never had any pain, but maybe that's not the only clue not to do them?

Very few sorta implies an "elite group." I've never been in one of those.

Do you have a link or video that I can either see or buy that shows me exercises for scapular stabilization and rotator cuff strengthening?

My ART doc used to joke that when he saw people at the gym doing dips or upright rows, he was tempted to walk up to them, hand them his card and say, "You'll want to call me sometime in the future. Trust me."
