Default Ground Beef

Has anyone used 96% lean ground beef in their recipes? Is it too dry? I currently use 93% in my burritos. Thanks.

Always. We don't buy lower. Of course, I don't eat them, but the hubby never complains. Works just fine, just don't overcook. But that goes for pretty much anything, right? Especially if you don't need to have it well done, you'll be fine. It might take a bit to get used to, I don't know. Again, I don't eat it, and we've always used that %.

I get a 1/4 cow every year. The ground beef is very lean and no added water. The cows are grain fed but with no added hormones. I wish I could get 1/4 cow of grass fed beef though.

When I get ground beef, I get the 93%-it seems just fine. For the most part, though, I use ground buffalo; it's lower in fat, has a higher protein content, and I love it. You do need to be careful not to overcook it though.

Same here, I really like my ground venison. I'm lucky enough to have a large supply of it, so I use it in all my recipes instead of beef.

Hey, Doo, I'm getting a shipment of 1/10 of a steer today, totally grass fed. The nutrition in the grass fed is awesome. And the shipping is free! Is it ok to say I got it from Lazy69ranch.com? It's a family farm and the owner will get on the phone with you and tell you all about his cattle. : )

Ground beef from the market freaks me out so I'm looking forward to some GOOD burgers. : )

1/4 cow costs us about 1/2 what lazy69ranch charges. No hormones but it is still grain fed. Hard pressed to pay twice as much for the grass fed. I would like to try (true) free range chicken eggs though. I wouldn't mind paying a little more for eggs because my yearly egg cost is not near what beef costs are.

Well, the 1/10th I'm getting averages out to about $7 a pound. Not cheap, but I'm willing to pay it for the improved nutrition and taste. I noticed that the 1/4 steer is MORE expensive.

I actually have backyard chickens--6 hens in my dog run. They give us about 2 dozen eggs a week. They are free range until I get sick of them tearing up the grass and chase them back to the dog run with the hockey stick. The taste and quality of the eggs are totally worth the nuisance that are chickens.

I'm in the food business, so the quality of the food is important to me. : )

Does grass fed beef taste better? Iv'e grown up on a farm aaso always grain fed beef (an Pork) in the freezer, never tasted grass fed. I know the nutrition profile is better, but flavor? I was under the impression that it was a little bland compared to grain fed. Not knocking it just curious. I would probably be left out of the family will if anybody found otu I bought some! They threw a fit when I brought chicken sausages to a cookout we had! Still getting shit about that!

Well I am sorry to tell everyone but most of us have really only had corn fed ground beef anyway. Unless you have had specifically grass fed beef. I would strongly suggest everyone watch this YouTube - King Corn Trailer. It is a great documentary on how corn is in everything!!!!

Actually King Corn is a pretty good Documentary. My boyfriend got ahold of it and we watched it together. I grew up in Iowa and to watch some of the stuff that has happened to the farming industry there makes me very sad.
