I was watching Good Eats and AB says to put the eggs in an electric kettle and cover with water. Bring the electric kettle to a boil and then turn it off and let it sit for 10 minutes. I have only found one kettle that has a suitable lid to allow you to easily put eggs in it, and it was $60 so I haven't tried this, but if you have one, it would be worth a shot. Seems like a great way to make a small batch of eggs for whenever you want them, instead of dealing with the whole dozen and having them not work out. I'd be interested in the results if anyone tried it - and also what type of kettle you had
We don't have an egg cooker, but our vegetable steamer seems to work perfectly every time. Throw the eggs in the top basket, set timer to around 20 minutes and walk away.
Yea, I think that's the same concept as this cooker we have. The eggs sit above the water so it's basically the steam that cooks them.
My mom found one that will cook up to 12 @ a time. Ours will do 7 (how they came up with 7, I don't know).

OK, call me lazy or whatever. But haven't you guys heard of an egg cooker? My wife had one when we got married. I harrassed her about it, until I started using it. Put the eggs in and turn it on. 20-min later perfectly boiled eggs. No brainer.
You poke a small pin hole in the eggs. Measure the correct amount of water. Turn it on and walk away. Done deal. Plus, they generally peel very, very easily. Works like a charm...I have one, they're awesome.

There's a really cheap microwave version of this at your local Sprawl-Mart/Target/wherever... for under $10. I figured at that price it was worth a shot.
It's really easy to use. I had to adjust the cooking time so the middles would be the right amount of cooked for my liking, but after the second try I had the perfect start to some egg salad, and now I know to add a minute to the cooking time listed. And it doesn't take up space on my counter because I can just throw it in any cupboard, it's not too big, and it's definitely not fragile or heavy. And you don't have to poke any holes in anything. Just add water. My kind of process. Took less than 10 minutes, and they peeled well too.

Nope, they don't blow up in the microwave. I bet if you forgot to put the water in, you might run that chance though, I don't know. I don't plan to find out.
They only explode when they heat up too fast. The multiple eggs and water to help absorb the energy slows down the process and gives the eggs time to slowly lose pressure.

After making a dozen deviled eggs for the holiday weekend, I'm thinking it might be nice if I had an egg cooker that did more than 4 at a time. But then again, how often do I need to make 12 hardboiled eggs? It would probably be cheaper to just buy another one of these cheapo egg cookers and then I wouldn't have to wait for the one to cool, I could just pop the next round in right away. Yes, eggcellent.....
I boiled 6 yesterday. I always just put them in a pot. Once it starts to boil I let it go for 10 minutes. After ten minutes I pour out the water and run them under cold water for a minute or so. Then I crack them all around on the counter and the shell comes off easily. It comes off even easier if I do it while running it under water. I guess I have been lucky after reading all this.

I have been poaching eggs - you can do that when it calls for boiled eggs. Just know to break the eggs into a bowl and slowly slide them into boiling water.
I have that microwave egg cooker as well, and I love it. It's from NordicWare. My microwave is a bit old, so I find it takes 12 minutes to cook my eggs. After I take the egg cooker out of the microwave, I dump the eggs in a bowl, dropping them from fairly far up so the shells crack, then I fill the bowl with cold water.

I have an egg-timer - it's shaped like a half-egg and you put it in the pot to boil with the eggs. It changes color as it cooks, and has marks on it so you can go for soft all the way through hard... I find that when I take them off the stove just as it hits the mark for hard-cooked, then rinse in cold, it works best. Saves me guessing how long they should actually cook... I think I got it at some kitchen gadget place, probably cost under $5...
