Default Rick's AM oatmeal

I used to hate oatmeal with a passion. One morning I decided to experiment a little and here's what I came up with. I've been eating this for a month now and haven't grown tired of it yet.

items needed:
cinnamon
1/2 roughly chopped apple (I like Granny Smith)
handful of Trader Joe's Nut and Berry mix (or anything containing a mix of nuts, dried berries, etc) chopped
oatmeal
salt
water
maple syrup is optional

Pour the water into the pan, turn it on high. I add a dash of rough sea salt in there, one quick shake. Add the apple pieces then the chopped nut/berry mix. Stir. Add cinnamon, stir again. When it comes to a boil turn the heat down a bit and let it simmer for a few minutes. Add the oatmeal, stir. Cool until it's almost done then remove from heat. Pour into a bowl. I put a tablespoon of real maple syrup on the top of mine if I'm in the mood.

I don't cook this until it's mush, I prefer to see the oatmeal bits whole. I know some people cook oatmeal until it looks like mashed potato, which I think is nasty.

If you can't buy a healthy nut/berry mix you can make one. The TJ mix contains almonds, cranberries, raisins, blueberries, cashews, walnuts, raspberries. Another fruit that is good in this are thompson golden raisins...they're huge and a yellowy color and really plump up when cooked.
