Someone said they cooked oatmeal in a slow cooker. I now have a small crockpot and was wondering how much water you are putting in verses how much steel cut oats. Any ideas?

Johnka told me the trick about bringing the Steel cut oats to a boil the night before. Turn off heat, cover, and let soak overnight. Heat up in the morning and you're good to go.
I eat rolled oats (quick cooking rolled oats because I'm impatient), but I just read that cooking times are "considerably longer" for steel cut oats. I hate having to make my oatmeal in the morning because a)the noise, b)the effort at 430am, c)I can't eat it hot, so I have to put it in the fridge for a few minutes to cool down.
I was thinking of just making it the night before and leaving it covered on the counter or something, but then it's thick and gross the next morning. Anyone have any suggestions for me, at least until I get some steel cut oats?

I make mine in the microwave oven. I use the 5 minute oats, not the quick ones. I like the texture better. I make them extra thick, then put an icecube in to cool them off. When it melts, it thins out a bit.

Thanks Cappy, I have been boiling mine up in the mornings but that sounds like a great time saver.

You can lighten up the recipe by not using all the dried fruit and using 1% milk rather than half & half.

I have oatmeal from an amish store nearby. i dont know how its cut or whatever, but its slightly flattened, and i cook it in the microwave with water for 3 minutes. it has a lot more texture than quaker anything.
