Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.)
Quinoa originated in the highlands of Peru and Bolivia, where it became a staple crop of the Inca empire. By comparison with most cereals it is rather primitive, requiring dehulling to remove bitter seed coat saponins. Considerable quinoa is sold in Canada as a gourmet item in health food stores, in the form of whole grain, pasta, or flour. Quinoa is considered to have some promise for Canada, and there is a Canadian Quinoa Association (Anon. 1992). Currently available forms are late-maturing, therefore vulnerable to frost, and are also susceptible to insect damage. Quinoa would appear to have some possibility for development through germplasm selection in Canada, but is likely to find a more receptive area of cultivation in other countries. In the US, quinoa seems to represent one of the relatively few apparently successful introductions of a new food plant (Johnson 1990). source
Cool. I will check out sobeys for it as well then. I discovered recently that co-op out here carries it as well. Although it is pretty expensive. Well as expenive as organic oats, which are also expensive in my books!
Ogedei, Safeway carries it in the stores where they have the full 'organic' section....
What kind of organic oatmeal were you referring to above?
I wish I could find proper steel cut oats somewhere - you can get 'pinhead' oats (scottish oatmeal), but not the bigger variety.. Let me know if you ever see it..
I don't remeber the brand of organic oats, but it was one of those small brown bags that the fancy grains come in in the organic section. They wanted 3 bucks or something for them. Heck I can get a 5kg box of quaker oats for like $5 at superstore. Guess I'm not Mr. Organic.
at a local health food store in Saint-Hyacinthe, but here.. I looked up the company (sorry, I actually didn't look at the photo and thought we could read it)
this might help you find some. I know I'm going to take the empty package to my local grocery stores and start asking for it

I will take a look for the ancient harvest stuff.

They've got all sorts of cool stuff there. Wheat berries, quinoa, flours of all kinds, dextrose, whole wheat pastas, grains and rices of all kinds. And it's all 'bulk format' for the most part, so not that expensive.
Make sure you're not a stranger we have 4 guys from Calgary now!
Og.
