Over the past few months, I'd been starting my day with a hot bowl of oatmeal. Bored, I picked up a box of Four Grain Cereal with Flax at Whole Foods. It was pretty good, so I ate through a few boxes.
Getting smarter, last week I headed to the bulk food section and filled a few bags with various whole grains and made my own.
Here's my current mixture. Equal parts of these four grains.
Steel Cut Oats
Buckwheat Grouts (technically not a grain, but so what!)
Rye Seeds/Grouts
Wheat Seeds/Grouts
1/2 cup scoop in a very large bowl. Add 1 1/4 cup water. Pinch of salt. Microwave on high for 10 minutes, stirring once or twice during cooking.
I put 1 tablespoon ground flaxseed in it, too. But I just add it at the end rather than cooking it in the mix.
I stir in some blueberries and Equal and wash it down with a steaming cup of Hot Cocoa (warm protein powder shake, actually).
Here's the nutritional gist of it, not including the fruit and hot cocoa, which are optional...
