im not sure if one of the other admins have been tinkering with the forum settings. i'll try refreshing the post cahse in maintenance to see if that helps any.
is it when you click on a thread youve read in the past and then clicked the first unread link at the top?

It's threads that I've read in the past, yes. It's in the views that list all the threads in that subforum OR the "New Posts" view, etc. When I click "Go To First New Post" icon. The little down arrow just to the left of the thread's title.
ive changed the settings for these so that any posts unread info etc is stored locally on a cookie on your pc, rather than in the database. to see if this helps.
the swap over may wipe out any info you have on which posts read, and which not read etc, but once you finish catching up, mark all threads as read, then from there on out, it should be easier.
can you let me know if this helps or not. and if it fixes the problem
Oh no. This isn't a good solution! At least not for me. My browser deletes cookies when I close it, so all this information was lost. When I click on New Posts it says there aren't any! I know there are. I can see them. All threads show up as read.
and when I use New Posts (not unread posts on a thread) - usually there is then a break & a notice that the threads below have not been updated but contain unread posts (or something like that)
that seems to have disappeared now.
yikes, ok i've put it back to the database based type. can you let me know if you're still getting the problem with the going to the last unread post thing please.
It seemed to work correctly for me the past times that I did it.. I will try a few more times and then work with Susie on getting the vBulletin team to look into it with us.
its related to the SEO url's. it never happened until that came into force.
can those who do still have the problem please post which browser their using, and if the same problem occurs for them on different browsers. (if you use IE can you try it on Firefox or another one, to see if that helps any) and let me know here if its happening for both.
also, for those its happening to, is it on every post or just the ocassional one?
there has to be a common factor thats causing it. most arnt experiencing this, so we need to find out what the link is between those that are experiencing it.
I'm using firefox on XP. But, it's only happened three times total, from what I can tell. It's only happened once since you changed the cookie/database thing back. I'll try explorer again, but it's been so rare, how knows how long 'til something goes wrong?

Before doing anything else, I tried the same url pasted into IE. No issue, but it's hard to tell if that's a good test or not. Still hasn't happened in IE.
its hard to pinpoint with it being so random. unfortunately i dont think theres muxh i can do unless the big boss agrees to remove the SEO URLS'. which i cant see happening. so i guess unless it becomes a major problem, we're stuck with it the few times its happening. as long as people can still access the posts etc, it should be ok
just shooting off my mouth here - but would this fit the symptom ? you added the SEO URLs but the history still has the OLD nON-SEO URL - so if you ask "show me unread" it will search your history for unread based on SEO URL - and finding none, pop you into the wayback machine, maybe. once you've done that - you don't duplicate the problem because your history now has the SEO URL in it. just thinking.
at least in my experience, if I go to threads I've read in the past, but not since the SEO URL, I'll pop to post #1 if I use first unread. If I go to a thread that I've read since the SEO URLs, I'll pop to the proper unread post. I can do it pretty consistantly because I've got a lot of training logs that I've read in the past but not maybe in the last couple of weeks.
its definately a problem thats occurred since the SEO was installed. its how we resolve it thats the issue. the SEO is needed, but the problems are too few and far between to warrant removing the benefits of the SEO. unfortunately, it may be that we simply accept the few problems. people can still view the posts,. and reply etc. so its a really small price to pay for all the good the Seo does.
as long as we keep an eye on it, so that if ever the problem gets out of hand, we should be ok.
i'll contact the Seo people and see if they can offer any insight, though its hard to pinpoint because its such a rare thing. but if anyone will know, it'll be them
This is really starting to be annoying. It happens 5 or 6 times a day now. It happens every time on RL's Friday thread. The Secret Santa thread takes you back 2 or 3 days, usually.
Is it worse because people are using those little Digg and Furl things more and more? I don't even get what they do. Maybe they're cool and worth all this annoyance, but since I don't use them, I'm thinking not.
It has recently started happening to me too (within the last couple weeks). Most often happens in the Secret Santa gifts thread, I click go to first new post and it brings me somewhere in the middle of the thread. It isn't every time but maybe 1 in 3 or thereabouts.

just a thought - no particular basis - what is your profile option for "posts per page" set to? mine is set to 40 and I don't have problems in those threads.
