Question

Was climbing an indoor wall on Dec 6 of last year and had my left hand in a two finger hold. Leaned back on that and something gave way in my wrist - almost like a pull out of place. I shook it out and did the rest of the climb (heck, it was a 5.8 that I was goofing around on), but something didn't seem right.

It was almost like I've dislocated or pulled a tendon. Now it has gotten better, and doesn't bother me much except when I pick up DBs that weigh more than 50 lbs. Or try to do wrist extensions, which I absolutely cannot do anymore. I know these types of strains often take a long time, but I haven't been able to climb now for over 6 months. Any insight would be appreciated.

Hey Kaiser,
That is a pretty sucky injury. Have you tried climbing with your hand taped up? I did the same thing to one of my fingers once, and I was able to get around it while it healed by taping it to my other finger. It wasn't perfect but it kept me climbing.

I am so excited though. I don't get to climb NEARLY as much as I would like because there has not been a good climbing gym here in LR, but a new one is opening in July, so I can really improve my skills this year.

JP, that is a good idea...I am not sure how I could wrap it but it sounds like it might work. I'll have to give it a try.

I need to climb because part of the reason I hold 2 (yes, two!) gym memberships is that one has the climbing gym and that plus 24 hour access makes it worthwhile, even though the trainers there seem to know less than me. Anyway, that gym has 22 top roping stations, a bunch of overhangs, 2 arches, and 5 self-belays. I just completed all of the 5.9 routes when I hurt myself. My goal was to do the easy (5.10) arch by spring, but that has obviously gone by the wayside.
