Default Planning to hike Big Bend -- looking for tips.

Hey, gang --

We're planning on taking the family to hike the South Rim in Big Bend this Fall. We've got four kids -- ages 9, 10, 12 and 13. They're all fit, but don't have a ton of experience with long distance hiking.

The trail we're looking at is about 14 miles -- thinking of breaking it into 2 days.

Would love to hear from anyone with tips and suggestions on family hiking in general and hiking in Big Bend in particular.

Hope it's not too late to reply to this post-- I see it's been up for a while. Definitely break the trip into 2 days, at least. Some of the trail sections are pretty rugged/rocky and steep in BB. And it's also so beautiful you'll want to spend the time. Also bring layers, b/c it gets pretty hot during the day, but can be very cold and windy on the Rim at night. Sunscreen also a necessity. I've never been in the fall, but have been twice in January, and even then the sun can do a number on you. It's a beautiful, magical place. Have fun.
