General Outdoor Fun DiscussionWhether you rock climb, kayak, snowboard, hike or hang glide, if you play outside and you play hard, come talk about it in here.
Anyone do it? I used to when I was WEEEEE, yes I was wee once.
I did some preliminary looks last night, but am concerned a little about length at 6'5" I couldn't seem to find much in terms of how long I should get, they all seemed to stop at 6'2" or so.
Any advice?
Og.

I LOOOOOOOVVVEEE to cross-country ski. I took it up for rehab after I blew out my ACL downhilling, and fell in love with it!
It's been a long time since I've purchased equipment, but I think now-a-days the recommendation is for shorter skis versus the really really long ones from years past. Do you have a good ski shop near you where you could go check stuff out (even if you didn't plan on buying from them)?

There is a place I could probably look into, however it occurred to me after this that the University has a large rental dept full of outdoor equipment.
So if we ever get enough snow locally I might swing by there and see about renting something. They charge about $17 a day for a ski set. Rock on.

just a question - living in So Cal it doesn't come up for me -
can you folks where there is snow on the ground most of the winter xcountry ski on the golf courses? Years ago a relative used to be able to ski on them in the winter (this was in Missouri) - just wondering if they still allow that.

I'm not totally in tune. I know there is a local course in town that gets a million people walk through it because of their lights, but not sure about skiing.
Up here there is so many trails close by I can't see it being an issue, that combined with a few large central green spaces where you could ski.

I have mostly skied in the woods on easy rolling hiking trails. Many of the state parks here have trail ratings. There are also some groomed places nearby. Not sure about the golf course angle since I don't live near one (they turned the one that used to be in my town into a mall *puke*). The people who own the property behind mine don't mind that I ski there ... there is an old farm road through the woods, and open rolling fields (where they graze cattle and horses the rest of the year) so that's usually where I go now.

I just started x-country skiing last winter and really enjoy it. Which is really weird because I typically hate anything cardiovascular in nature.
Around me there are a few golf courses that let you ski on them. Its pretty nice, one is about a 3 minute drive from my house. There is a lot of trails around us also that we can use.
