Default How to Survive

I am currently working on an article for Wilderness Way magazine titled How to Survive. I will be traveling to the Shenandoah to collect some photos and spend three days and 2 nights with a couple of backpacking guides. I will also be trying out some cool gear from Blude Ridge Outdoors. The article will look at topics including shelter construction, fire builiding, navigation, etc.

Thanks,
Coach Hale

Default Survival tools

I think I would make a list of very handy survival tools. Not just the leathermans but light weight axes or saws to help build shelters in the back country. I do a lot of hiking and hunting right from my front door . Im less than a mile as the crow flies from Mt Skokomish wilderness area and less than 4 from Staircase Olympic National Park. Too many trails and personal routes to cover here. Im OUT THERE at least three times a week. Always carry the ability to make fire is rule one. Bring snacks with you even if your only going out for a couple hours excersise rule two. Always keep minimal shelter with you such as Plastic sheeting or ponch to keep rain snow and sun off you if you end up unexpectantly spending the night. Always carry a good knife or multi tool even if just going to the store, its a good habit to get into. If you have time check out the essays and forums at Kifaru.net. Its all about the back country.

Thanks Lineofduty1 for the recommendations and the site suggestion

I almost always carry with me even if going out for a day hike:
Fire starting kit
Poncho, plastic bags or tarp
knife, hatchet, small shovel
flashlight and candles
knife
rope or bungy cord
maybe some snacks

This month's Wilderness Way features an article I recently wrote titled Survival Weekend. The mag can be ordered through the site The article is in Wilderness Way which is now on stands. If you can't find it in a local store you can order at the site http://wwmag.net/core.htm

thanks,
Coach Hale
