Default Canadian Rockies Vacation

My wife and I are trying to plan a Canadian Rockies vaca in early May. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Actually, I think we'll start in Vancouver and do the Inside Passage ferry first.

That drops you off at Prince Rupert. If we can take a rental car on the ferry (wife says we can), we could drive to Prince George.

... and over to Jasper...

Lake Louis...

Yoho Nat'l Park...

Banff...

and lots of other cool stuff. We'd like to do some day hikes but will only be gone for about 12 days.

If you have any suggestions for stuff to see (outdoors), it would be appreciated. We've never been.

I'm sorry I don't have any suggestions, I've never been either. I just wanted to say that this trip sounds and looks amazing. Absolutely beautiful pictures. I hope you two have a good time.

Last time I was at Lake Louise was when I was in 1st or 2nd grade. Probably a bit more built up know. Oh BTW --- I hate you!

Screw banff... Go there for a day maybe,

Hit up Canmore instead. Better mountains to climb, reasonable pricing on everything, and just overall a nicer place. Its only 10-15mins east of banff. Watch out for lake louise too, its extremely touristy, very nice place though... Probally not as bad in may.

If you are into hiking, all of these places have geat spots, ive been to all of them for extended periods of time. In may, if you want to hike some mountains, there will probally be snow above the treeline, but paths are always made. I would strongly suggest the hike 'chinamans peak'. Its really easy, 2 hour hike that give you an amazing view where the rockies hit the foothills, its really cool.

If you have to cut things short, skip price george. Yoho has amazing mountaineering and would be cool to see, but im not really sure if there is much more then that.

If your into biking, the northshore of vancouver is great (but I warn you, almost everyone can get in much over their head with a wrong turn). There are also some great hiking trails on these mountains. Its surreal on them, you are in a big city, but on a little traveled mountain.

Any specific questions just ask, ive spend 3 summers hiking, driving, biking, climbing around all these areas. Some of my friends say I am the ultimate tour guide to the canmore area. haha.. Ive climbed almost every peak in this area and biked/climbed most trails. Amazing place.

Anyway you do it, its going to be an awesome trip. You really cant go wrong anywhere.

Cool! Thanks, Frank!!! That's great info!

Sorry, ODB! You'd likely make better use of the opportunity than we will (being old and all) but we'll still enjoy it.

Okay, you have a point there!

I'm down for hiking but my wife always gets frustrated when she can't keep up so I wind up sitting and waiting until she catches up or going really slowly. It's okay but I would like to get her in hiking shape before we go.

Pictures from the trip.

Most of our hiking was just little side trips along the road. Nothing serious. Their national parks are HUGE so there were plenty of trails to walk down for a few hours at a time.

Actually, my travel agent (aka WIFE) looked at that but decided it was WAY TOO MUCH TIME! So, we flew to Seattle rented a car, drove to Vancouver for three days, then to Jasper, down to close to Banff only close enough to see everything else and then down into Idaho and back to Seattle. From there, we ferried over to Victoria. About a 2,000 mile trip in 11 days... guess who did all the driving.

Brad, I can't access the pics. I only get to a sign-in page. Am I doing something wrong?

Brad, I finally got around to checking out your pics. Wow - talk about being in my back yard. That shot of you sitting on the bench in the West End is REALLY close to where I used to live.

The question mark falls photo in Jasper - I'm pretty sure that's Maligne Canyon Falls but it could be Athabasca too. Hard to tell - I think it's Maligne though.

Butchart is pretty nice, eh? Spring is a special time there but it really is a great place to visit at any time of the year.

And it looks like you lucked out on the weather too. Considering what a &*()&($#@# SHI**Y summer it's been, weather-wise, you obviously hit it at one of the few good points. Hope you bought a lottery ticket too. :p

I wasn't sure but we felt like we lucked out on the weather. We've been out to the west coast two or three times and always had good luck.. except for the snow one December. We really thought it might not snow because of the Pacific. Wasn't bad, though!

Too late but Waterton Provincial Park was cool. I went to Glacier in 94, it was so damned crowded and everywhere I looked I saw people with "bear bells" on. So...north we went. Spent 2 weeks in Waterton before driving up to Calgary, which was a city that I really liked. Montana was ok but "meh". Especially seeing Jim Neighbors and his boyfriend and Charlie Sheen, who looked to have gotten his ass beat earlier in the day.
