General Outdoor Fun DiscussionWhether you rock climb, kayak, snowboard, hike or hang glide, if you play outside and you play hard, come talk about it in here.
I've been out at Steamboat a few times already. It's been GREAT!

aw man you guys are making me jealous! i didn't get to ski ONCE last season, maybe this year . . .
are you guys powder or ice skiiers? i learned in VT on ice and don't really like powder- it gets too heavy on my skiis and i can't turn as well but apparently i'm weird. (no big shock there)
Aaaah, there is nothing but champagne powder up here. It's amazing. Light and fluffy. I got vertigo earlier this week on one of the Passes here because I had a day full of face shots. My goatee froze from all the snow hitting me in the face. And talk about a lower body workout!!!!
I need more snow.

I broke my skis last year on some exposed rocks (well, the edges broke, which essentially ruins the skis). I can't wait to go out West somtime, probably closer to spring since I *love* Spring skiing, when it's warm enough to have a tshirt.
After trying out some new sticks in Colorado a month ago (they had AMAZING snow conditions there), I picked up a pair at the annual end of the season blowouts that happen here in Chicago. About 50% of retail price when all is said and done. I love 'em and have them here in my home office. Behind the door.... so my wife can't see them because she doesn't know I got them.

I'm actually going out to Vail/BC from March 29th to April 6th (7 full days of skiing). As mentioned in my post from a year or so ago, I broke my old skis, so I'm going to get a new pair when I go out there, since they should have sales as well. Are those really nice? I've had Salomon's before (XScream...they were yellow), and I loved them, so naturally I'm leaning towards this brand.
I liked the XScreams too. My last pair was Salomons and I'm preferential to the brand. This pair is supposed to be the '1 quiver ski'. As such, it's really really good in most everything, just not a specialist in anything.
When I skied it, the first day, I though the tips were getting bounced around a lot, but by the second day, I realized that it was punishing me for sitting back on the tails. Once I fixed my form, these things ripped. I mean, they like to go really really fast, high speed GS turns with zero skittishness. But the thing that really sold me was that they also performed well in the bumps (well, good enough to bring me back to bumps after a number of years away). That's a versatile ski. Plus it has a wide waist profile, wide enough for powder.
I'd recommend trying them if you are out there. It's got a full wood core, so it's very lively and puts back all the energy you give it (which is why it's so fast). I'm VERY picky about my skis and the way they perform and have been testing various models for the last few years... this one finally got me.
I was definitely planning on trying them anyway, but after the review you gave them I'm that much more eager to do so. Gee, thanks, as if time weren't passing slow enough as it is while I wait for my ski vacation.
Just bought new Salomon Temptress twin tips! The bindings just got done being mounted, now I'm ready to head out on that New England terrain! I'm going tomorrow night for the first time this season, just to a small mountain. My bf rides, we're enthusiasts but not pros so we're starting small for the first time. Plus I'm driving home from school for the weekend so we can't go til after dinnertime, small mountain is cheap after 6!
I'm making my yearly trip out West in March, can't wait to hit up Vail/BC again and bust out those skis that I got last year (as discussed in previous posts).
I am going snowboarding for the first time EVER on saturday...
Not exactly a ski nut job, but I am looking forward to it!

Awesome! I would suggest you take a lesson. I see so many people try to teach themselves {put random sport here} and struggle. If only they took the couple hours and few dollars they would've gotten over the newbie hump so much quicker.

No worries there man. I am not one who subscribes to the theory I can throw a million punches and self analyze until I figure out what I am doing wrong.
I went out with 4 other people from work. We are all total beginners. We paid for a day of private lessons. Definetely more fun near the end, but I would also note that our skill level although still low is a million times higher than when we started.
It was a windy day. The gondola up to the mountain didn't start running till 45 minutes or so after it was supposed to. They wouldn't rent to us till the knew it was going to be going up.
It was a nice day, the only really cold part was the wind when we were going up the chair lift.
It was pretty fun though, a little scary at times, but the last run when we had some skill was pretty good.

We went to Sunshine Ski Village (www.skibanff.com). We have numerous mountains within a couple hours drive. Including a small hill inside the city that was used in the 88 olympics.
