Red face What do you do...

... when you run into these types of situations while climbing?

What if that's where you were putting your hand to hang on???

That don't have those in the climbing gym.

Hopefully you are on rope and can drop. Time to work out a new route.

Years back, I would grab a friend or two and head for the rocks almost every weekend. I always worried about this but, fortunately, I never had the opportunity to discover how I'd handle it.

Man what if you stuck your hand in that AWESOME grip and were pulling yourself up and the snake slithered out on to your hand!

AHHHHHHHhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh hhhhhhhhhhhh.................. ........THUD!

Exactly why we use ropes I guess.

Where did that picture come from? Can I use it in my English presentation on tieing in with a figure 8 knot? It would be awesome for the section of "WHY you tie in. "

Sure, cool with me! If you right click the image and go under properties, you'll see that I was "borrowing" it from the rockclimbing.com website anyway.

Funny you bring up the snakes in a hand-hold scenario. That actually happened to me while doing some top-roping at Castle Rocks in SF bay area. I went to put my hand into a nice pocket and saw something move slightly. Luckily I wasn't too tired to ignore it. When I looked, there was a small rattle snake coiled up in there. Needless to say, I said "F@%#" and chose a different hand-hold.
