Default Glucose Issues

Well, I got some results back from the doctor today. Cholesterol levels are all good (I am on statin meds), triglycerides are good, glucose levels are scary.

I started a low carb eating lifestyle on January 1, 2008 and I know that I am on the program so that's not a problem. I weight train 3 days a week and even get in 4 cardio sessions per week, 2 short HIIT's and two long high intensity's but not HIIT's.

But glucose was at 102 in November 2007, 95 in June 2008, 109 in November 2008 and then 119 in March 2009.

My doctor said at 126 you are diabetic regardless of your lifestyle and fitness levels. He also said that that my problem is stemming from my weight, 177 today (that's at home, nude) and 182 (his office, fully clothed but no shoes) and he said under 170 should be a reasonable goal. I'm 5'5" and would estimate my BF% at 18-20%. (okay probably 20%). Understandably, losing weight is now a much higher priority. I have photos at the Men's Health Belly Off contest site and my user name is farsteve if anyone really wants a look.

I'm looking for reasonable and researchable suggestions/ideas that may aid me in getting my glucose levels under control in addition to losing weight.

Such as, would adding some low GI carbohydrates or other fiber back into my diet be beneficial? Should I trade out a weight lifting session per week for a cardio session? HIIT or SS? Should I trade a cardio for a lifting session?

I am not very knowledgeable in this area and would certainly appreciate response's from those that are.

Thanks in advance,

Steve

Steve - I tracked myself (with no help from Internist) going from pre-diabetic to full blown. the two best resources are Jenny's Blood Sugars 101 (book is easier to read, but it is also on her blog - all of it and updated to boot), and after than Richard Berstein's Diabetes Solutions.

Many of us are pretty sceptical that losing weight generally helps. It is a good thing to do, but not necessarily for BGs. My fat loss and exercise did not slow down my progression to full diabetes. It is a pain in the ass to have to learn the ropes but there are a whole lot more things that are more seriousl.

Anyway, good luck with it all. Rob

So I might just be in the glucose crapper despite what I do? I hate to think that way but I get retested in July and I'll do what I can until then.

Thanks for the info. I'll check out the blogs and books.
