Default Anemia

I just met a girl who a week after our first date is in the hospital for iron deficiency.

Got any ideas?

Exercise, balanced meals, GOOD multivitamin, joy

Is it incurable?

She needs to take iron. What more is needed? She probably doesn't eat enough iron enriched foods.

This entirely depends on the root cause of her anemia.

On the other hand (devil's advocate)
You've just met her; you've had one date. Is she even asking your advice? Is it really your job to fix her at this point?

The iron isnt being absorbed.

Lisa, sweetie, I'm not going to give her advice, I just want to know.

Iron is absorbed better with Vitamin C (pills or foods)
Most young women (who have iron def anemia) have issues with monthly blood loss being more than their iron absorption.
So using hormonal means to stop monthly menses is one way to adress the problem.
Using birth control pills to cycle every 3 or more months is now becoming more common.

You didn't say that up front.

My bad - I took the "got any ideas" and subsequent list as indicators that you were planning to make suggestions to her or give her advice.

If you actually meant "can anyone tell me more about causes and treatments for this for my own knowledge", I apologize.

I was just trying to also get to Drs point: Anemia in women can be complicated - firstly because not all anemia is iron-deficiency anemia. Even if it is iron-deficiency there can be many factors: lack of intake, poor absorption, blood loss (monthly periods or other occult condition that needs to be worked up), even bulimia (which ends up lack of intake but not for the reasons you suspect). First time diagnosis of anemia sufficient to cause hospitalization - seems like there might be something going on? Or maybe not.
