Default i am smelly

ok so i have been exercising for a couple of years now. lifting, triathlon training, lots of martial arts, etc. and while i have always been prone to sweating pretty heavily i never smelled bad. for the past couple of weeks at the gym i have been noticing that i smell awful once i break even a slight sweat. its gross and very embarassing. my diet has not changed. the only thing that has actually changed is that i started taking the mega man vitamins from gnc and fish oil pill every day. could that cause a change in the stinkiness of my sweat? is this just one of those things that happens sometimes? any thoughts?

Most BO is caused by the waste products of bacteria, not sweat itself. If you shower just before your workout, do you still smell?

Vitamins are overrated if you have good diet. Ditch those first.

Could it be the fish oil? Seems unlikely, unless you smell like fish. There's always the chance for a reaction to a food, though.

Has your body composition changed much? Training style? Testosterone supplement (either HRT or "steroids")? Lots of things can cause "issues."

Have you recently purchased any new gym clothes made from high-tech fabrics? Some of the new fabrics can react with some people's sweat to create unpleasant odors.

My second thought was the vitamins. If you suspect them, don't take them for a week and see what happens. I think a good multi-vitamin is a smart nutritional choice; if these turn out to be the culprit, you can look for another brand.

What about washing your gym clothes in the "sport" detergent. Maybe your clothes aren't getting clean and they're gettin re-ignited when you start sweating??

Good luck.

its actually kind of a sour smell. i actually have started using the sweat wicking clothes when i work out. i didnt think of that as possible culprit. i will look into that. as for showering before working out. i shower twice per day. once in the morning before work and once after i work out. so never right before i exercise but earlier in the day. i hadn't thought of sport detergent. i will pick some up and see what happens.

as for body composition. it actually has changed a bit recently but not through steroids or anything. i have put on a lot more muscle than i thought i could in such a short time in the past few weeks. but could an increase in muscle cause a fluxuation in hormones and would that cause me to smell? i didnt even think of that. i never did any hypertrophy workouts before and i have done hyper and strength lifting for the past few weeks. so its new territory for me. anyway, thanks for all the tips i will do my best to trouble shoot this based on your advice.

Like you, I shower before and after workouts, but my workout clothes get funky after a while.

Here's an another alternative to the sports detergent. Use a cup of white vinegar in the wash. After adding the water, just throw in the vinegar and it gets rid of da stink. Works great on towels too, to get rid of that dank smell.

Good luck!

Once synthetic fabrics get funky, they funky. There's no unfunkin' it. That's been my experience, anyway.

I had a few shirts that got a mildew smell from hanging out in the bottom of the hamper. Dry, they were fine, but a bit of heat and sweat and it wasn't good. I got rid of them after trying multiple washing tips. Now, I let them dry before tossing them into the hamper. Seems lame, but there it is.

All great tips on the smelly clothing issues... it's not just me!! I'll give the vinegar or the sport detergent a try on my sport bras.

The sport detergent that made the news during the Olympics is something I am going to try in the near future. It's called WIN. There was an article in the WSJ about it! It's designed specifically for high-tech synthetic fabrics. WIN :: High Performance Sport Detergent :: WIN Detergent :: WIN product
