Default Cough - how do I get rid of it?

Everytime I get it 2 days after my cold starts, it goes crazy for about a week-2 weeks. How do I get rid of it? There has to be something I am not doing right because this is not normal for the cough to go this crazy. Sometimes I get cough attacks where I cough like 7-8 times before it stops and I am coughing every 30 seconds to 2 minutes.

What can I do to get rid of it? Life Savers dont work (calms it down a little bit while its in my mouth but then cough goes back crazy after its all melted) and drinking water doesn't work. What works?

Go to the pharmacy and ask the pharmacist to recommend a good syrup for dry cough.

No prob. I usually go for one that has codeine in it, it seems to work the best. Just be careful. A lot of people are sensitive or allergic to codeine so make sure you read the labels. If you are on any other medications it is definitely best to discuss this with the pharmacist so you don't get any interactions.

Are narcotics so easy to get in Canada?

Cough suppressants with codeine are pretty easy to get anywhere. If your can't find them on the shelf they might be behind the counter. Tylenol One has codeine and I believe that they keep it right beside the extra strength Tylenol. I think codeine is really the only narcotic that is sold over the counter. Is codeine hard to get over the counter in the USA?

Weird So you can't even ask your pharmacist for Tylenol One?

Codeine is Rx only here in the states. I use a syrup called Delsym that works well.

A dry cough for me is an allergy symptom. When I take my Singulair for allergies like I am suppose to it goes away. I recently had to start again due to all my coughing and now it is gone.

Wow. Good to know thanks Rookie. I know here the dose is very low for the OTC stuff so it is a schedule 5 med, otherwise you need a Rx for anything about a certain mg/ml. It has been so long for me needing a cough med, I usually grab for the Buckley's the second I start getting a sore throat or sniffles. I figure it tastes so bad it should scare the cold out of me before it takes hold. It works for me so far.

Listen to Jenn but I would also forget the Life Savers... not cough suppressants, just candy.

And yet Aleve (naproxen) requires a prescription up here.

Thats because Aleve is a low dose naproxen so it is considered a schedule 5 drug. I don't know if our classifications are the same as the USA.

Can you still buy effedra (sp?) across the boarder? I know it has been banned here for a really long time.

I'm not sure if you can get Ephedra by name (I think not). You can get pseudephedrine OTC (aka Sudafed) but you have to ask the pharmacist for it - it isn't out on the shelf. The stuff on the shelf is reformulated to use phenylephrine - which doesn't work as well as far as I can tell.

Lisa, it's likely just a simple writing error, but Ephedra and Sudafed are two different meds. Ephedra is a weight loss/fat loss aid and Sudafed is a decongestant.

Aleve is available OTC, but I'm not sure how much naproxin is in it. Narcotics are simply not available OTC, and since naproxin is not a narcotic, it's available in very low dose OTC.

Sudafed was removed from the open floor because it's used to make methamphetamine.

I know this - ephedrine & pseudoephedrine are however related compounds. That is why I wrote one phrase about ephedra being unavailable and another different phrase about the availability of pseudoephedrine. But they are related compounds and I didn't think it hurt the discussion to include what I knew about each of them.

You could try acupuncture. I used to have a pretty bad cough, kind of like yours. I got a cold during water polo season. I was an idiot and kept going to practice. When the other cold symptoms were gone, the cough stayed. It was a horrible cough. I'd wake up every morning coughing pretty badly. Throughout the day, I'd cough pretty frequently.

Anyway my mom suggested that I try acupuncture. Just one appointment helped me A LOT!

Cough is precipitated when certain minute particles enter into the respiratory pathway and irritates the airways. This blockage hampers the normal flow of air from lung to nose and vice versa. Cough is also caused by fever, body pain, headache etc.Turmeric is a very potent antiseptic and Honey is a very good Anti-tussive.You can explore mamaherb
where
you can see all the comments for this treatment and to how many people it really helped so far.

Can't get ephedrine off the shelf anymore in the US. Drugs containing psuedoephedrine are monitored pretty tight in California because of the meth problem. They are locked up and they scan your ID when you get them. But at least, from what I've heard from a few Sheriff's that work in narcotics it's had a pretty positive impact.

I'm glad Mon made this thread because I'm just getting over the flu and I have that stupid cough too. lol

I just want to go on record agreeing with rookie on that. That Delsym is over the counter but really works well for a cough.

Exclamation Natural Cough Syrup

Get fresh thyme, aniseed, ginger, fenugreek seeds and grated garlic - 1tsp of each item added to 2 cups of water, bring to a boil, lower the heat and simmer to about 1 cup of liquid - add 1-tbsp honey and 1-tsp of lemon juice and stir. Drink 1-tsp every 4-hrs. (the cooled liquid can be kept in the refrigerator).

Drink lots of water and clear liquids, soda water, Perrier, etc. - avoid fruit juices and drinks that have a lot of sugar. Hope this helps you with this cough!

That kind of cough should be checked out by a doc - could be asthma starting to show up. That can come on later in life, as well.

Slippery Elm Bark can work when nothing else will - and cough drops called "Fishermans Friend".

Yeah, I'd get that checked out. If it's that bad, it's worth it to get the opinion of a professional. You don't smoke do you? I used to smoke like 8 years ago and when I got a cold it was hell fo me. Just couldn't stop coughing.
