Default High Blood Pressure

I'm not sure if I actually have HBP, but I may have pre-HBP. I think that's what it's called.
Anyway, my blood pressure is always high at the drs office.
I had an appointment today, and to no surprise it was high.

I have a cuff at home and was told to just check it at home as I always have been.

It bounces around a lot, which is normal.
But today it has stayed consistently on the high side and was even higher when I got home.

I eat pretty healthy. and Workout by lifting 3x week and cardio 2x week.

So I'm surprised.
Anyone else have this?

My dad suffered from HBP, but... it's hard for me to say this ... he was an alcoholic. He was a good guy though and I loved him dearly.
So since he had it maybe I can too?
(I don't drink much )

I just thought that with all my working out for a few years that this wouldn't be an issue.

thoughts?

sia - welcome to the board, but for heaven's sake, how can we comment when you didn't give any BP readings? By the way standards for what is high and what is not have recently changed. Are your readings at home and at the docs the same? Rob

Hypertension does have a big genetic component that it appears that you have inherited. Do you have weight to lose? Read about the DASH diet.

You're right. In my effort to get my message typed out I didn't add the most important. I thought about this when I went to bed and I even dreamed about getting up and editing this

I don't need to lose weight. I weighed in yesterday at 111 which is how I've been for almost all my life. I'm 5' 4.5"- 5'.5" lol... depending on who measures me. And am in my early 50's.

At the beginning of all my dr appointments (even dentist-he takes me BP too) it's high somewhere between 136/92 - 155/90.

It's always been 114/60 until several months ago.
so it's a change. my readings are usually lower at home, but not always.

yesterday at the dr it was 136/92. When I got home it was higher. But then I had a tetnus shot so I was in pain.
My dr said that this is something that I should keep track of because of family history and because of its jump in the past year.

I do have pre-diabieties. (is there a spell check on here?) I'll be getting this checked again in a few days (I didn't fast yesterday)

I was surprised because of my working out that my BP has gone up.

Hey, I kinda had the problem. Back at home, whenever the nurse took my blood pressure, I got a high reading for someone my age. I think it was around 130/80 or 90. For an 18 y.o. that's ridiculous I think.
Last semester, I went for a check up at my university's health center, and I got the same reading, BUT, the nurse used a thicker arm wrap thing. And my blood pressure measurement became more normal. (around 115/72 or something if I remember right). The nurse said I had pretty muscular arms so I needed a thicker one.

Well anyway, what I'm trying to say is, maybe you're just too buff, so you might want to try using a thicker BP measurer (I have no idea what they're called).

sia - regarding prediabetes, my take at a similar stage was that I was diabetic. You may want to read Dr. Bernstein's book, Diabetes Solution (don't pay list for any version earlier than 2007). If you are "pre' getting good blood pressure control is important according to recent studies. Have you considered metering your blood glucose, BGs? Spending much time above 120 probably and above 140 is damaging to your body. My doctor did not want me to meter, but I starting tracking some dangerously high readings and changed my diet, and eventially went on medications.

You don't need a prescription to buy a blood glucose meter and strips. Walmart has a meter for $8 and a hundred strips for $43. When I was pre-diabetic I measured my blood glucose and adopted a lower carb diet to keep the number down. Again I would recommend the Bernstein book, which is near encyclopedic in it coverage of diabetes. Most people who follow him do not follow him exactly, but he is the best guide.

Hypertension is diagnosed when the bp is consistantly above 140/90 range. A normal high rating is considered 130to139/85-89.

I am sure that you have taken in to account that stress will elevate your readings. Keeping this in mind, you are taking readings at home but are obviously concerned about the readings being high, so they are because you are stressed about it. The readings I gave above are at rest, so look at what you are doing before you take your pressure at home. Now diabetes on the other hand can affect your bp too. Unfortunately as we age the risk for diabetes increases. It is more and more common from the age 40 and beyound. I hate to say this as well but being skinny does not mean you cannot get certain illnesses such as these. So being thin, having a family hx, having diabetes plus having another birthday can all increase your risks. Your doctor right now is just monitoring you so no need to get too worried. Do you have other symptoms that have caused him concern or is it just the random high readings?

Another thing is the comment that you eat 'pretty' healthy. It could be that you may not have as good a diet as you think when you look at what is in what you eat. Just a thought. I know my mom thinks they eat pretty healthy until I start pointing out things, then she kicks me out of the kitchen .

Will my breath make the ladies go away for 2 hours after that?

If this is something that only started a few months ago, and the readings at home are still high, even if lower than at the docs, it sounds like something you should definitely talk to your doc about. That's not something to mess around with.

High blood presure is more serious that a lot of people realize. If it goes on for a long time intreated, it can cause serious health issues. TIt damages your arteries and put undue pressure on the heart. There's nothing to get worried about quite yet, but you should definitely monitor it. People are so against taking blood pressure medication, but it really has few side effects, so I'm told and it fixes the problem. Blood pressure is affected by so many things so even if you are being healthy, you might just have a predisposition to high blood pressure and there are meds that can fix it if changing your diet can't.
