May sound like a silly question but when is the time to discard a shaker bottle?
I've been surviving on free shaker bottles from supplement companies and want to know how long these can be used for. The main concern for me is the "leaking" of plastic, much the same way that we discourage re-using bottles from mineral water.
I accidentally left one unwashed in a room that we hardly ever use. I discovered it weeks later. I had had greens in that shake, so I wasn't terribly surprised that it "grew". However, I was kinda surprised that the "growth" was actually "moving". Turns out there were a number of tiny green maggots.
I just happened to sniff inside my shaker bottle today and noticed it had quite a punky smell to it. I'm glad I bought two more. I think I'll try soaking it and see if that doesn't get the stink out.

I use Nalgene bottles, they're stout and don't easily grow things. I had an old water bottle I used...had it since '84 or so...left it in my coffin (surfboard bag that holds 2 boards) with a mix of whey and gatorade in it. Discovered it 2 months later, it had "expanded". Took a bit of hosing with a dose of bleach to kill that smell.
