Default When is it time to discard your shaker bottles?

May sound like a silly question but when is the time to discard a shaker bottle?

I've been surviving on free shaker bottles from supplement companies and want to know how long these can be used for. The main concern for me is the "leaking" of plastic, much the same way that we discourage re-using bottles from mineral water.

It's a different kind of plastic. I think the concern with disposable water bottles is when they "crinkle."

Just throw shaker bottles out if they start to stink.

I accidentally left one unwashed in a room that we hardly ever use. I discovered it weeks later. I had had greens in that shake, so I wasn't terribly surprised that it "grew". However, I was kinda surprised that the "growth" was actually "moving". Turns out there were a number of tiny green maggots.

I threw that one away.

It was a closed shaker bottle? How'd the little things get in there to lay the eggs? Huh?

Answer. They didn't!

Maybe they were already there when you were having the shake!

Yum...

Nice try. The cap wasn't completely down.

I just happened to sniff inside my shaker bottle today and noticed it had quite a punky smell to it. I'm glad I bought two more. I think I'll try soaking it and see if that doesn't get the stink out.

I use Nalgene bottles, they're stout and don't easily grow things. I had an old water bottle I used...had it since '84 or so...left it in my coffin (surfboard bag that holds 2 boards) with a mix of whey and gatorade in it. Discovered it 2 months later, it had "expanded". Took a bit of hosing with a dose of bleach to kill that smell.

baking soda & hot tap water usually does the trick - or bleaching followed by soda treatment, followed by a day in the sun.

My bottle was foul enough to be considered WMD.
