Has anyone's child experienced growing pains when they were going through growth spurts? Justin has been waking up crying in pain some nights that his legs hurt. It happened last night and it hurts me so much to see him in pain. He has a Doctor's appt. on Friday, and I of course am going to talk to him about it to make sure it is not something more serious as I am just guessing at the cause right now. I was just curious if anyone else experienced this.
My girls get them too mostly around the knees. some light massage and a half dose of tylenol works for them. Also monthly trips to the chiro keeps them inline.
Could it be a potassium or magnesium deficit? At my age I can't claim "growing pains" and a couple of years ago I didn't understand my wife's complaints about night leg cramps. Then..one night one of my calves was in a vise...a banana helped, in a day or two.
i think its called apophysitis. just learned it in one of my major classes not too long ago.
i had them a bit in my legs while going throught my spurts as well, although..they werent that bad. just mild pain.
My son, now 3 years 8 months, started getting them once per week since the last 2 weeks. It is not in the middle of the night though but surely in the middle of some activity like jumping, running.. He limps for next 2 days. I have a muscle relaxant for external application and a medicine "Combiflam".
My son, now 11, has had "growing pains" off and on in his legs since he was around 6. Most the time not serious but usually at night. Fact is..that's the only time he is still enough to notice.
We never wen to a doctor..we gave him liquid tylenol or advil to ease it and he seemed pretty happy with that. He is developing fine and it hasn't slowed him down a bit. So I haven't concerned myself.
Not to say you shouldn't see a doctor...especially if it keeps on night after night. It usually comes and goes with my boy.
Oh...and his mother and I experience more pain as he grows too. Pretty sure there's no cure
Nicholas (age 7) has them in his right leg same place, we did x-rays, MRI, the works- last year. I will be taking him again to check up on it (get another set of x-rays and if necessary another MRI) in a few months. But we occaisionally have used a compress pack w/aspirin (avoids the stomach) and liquid motrine for kids. But just a heat pack has had the placebo affect which also works
When I was growing, I had terrible pains in my legs. Especially after a day of walking or standing. Like a Disneyland day. I would also get bad cramps in my calves after such a day.
My mom would massage my calfs sometimes, but it only helped DURING the massage.
It was a terrible aching feeling. A hot bath seemed to help at times. As did tylenol.
The doctor recommended stretching and massage, but told me that the time to do the stretching was when the weren't hurting. It's preventative, not a cure. Not that it can't help at the time of the pain, but the real goal was to minimize the chances of it continuing.
If you have one of those foam rollers, you might teach him to us it on his calves and dorsiflexors every day.
TG,
How old is your son? When I was about 12-13, I started getting pains in my knees. The Dr. said that it was Osgood Schlatter's disease. Sounded serious, but it was just that the bones were outgrowing my muscles and tendons. Went away soon enough. Hope that helps.
I used to get really bad pains in my legs, especially at night. They just wanted to move and I couldn't stay still...not sure this could be restless leg sydrome...if there is such a thing. Normally tylenol was the only thing that seemed to help me. It's torturous though, not so pleasant.
